The peak of competition season, what a time! Also the reason I haven't posted in a while. Between working, teaching, and training, it doesn't leave time for much else. With two big competitions coming up, the PSO Canadian and Northwest championships, I keep getting approached about how to deal with the nerves and anxiety. I have in the past been very open about how extreme the anxiety and panic can be for me and how it never gets better. In a pole performance, there's an added layer of scariness due of the dangerous nature of the sport, and because everyone is pushing themselves to the edge of their abilities. I DON'T WANT TO DIE AND TRAUMATIZE THE AUDIENCE!! <-- am I right?? 😫
My main advice is this (keep in mind this is still something I struggle with): DON'T LOSE SIGHT OF THE BIG PICTURE. The competition itself whether you kill it or bomb it will be over soon, and there will always be more. Right now you might be spending your time counting the days, the hours, and not letting yourself enjoy anything because you have this looming dark competition cloud over you. But whatever happens, it's all going to be over in the blink of an eye! It's actually a beautiful thing that you get to be on stage with everyone's eyes on you for those few minutes, that's the stuff that makes life worth living! In the future when you think back on what you did, the feelings of fear and anxiety are not what will be important, you'll be thinking about the amazing experience you had and the privilege it is to have the opportunity to express yourself and tell your story! ❤️
In those final moments when I'm backstage shaking and wanting to run away and about to throw up, I tell myself "these feelings are ok, this is just my adrenaline going, and fortunately/unfortunately, it will all be over before I know it." Like everything else in life. And though it is scary as f#%k, try to enjoy those moments on stage because they are so precious!
An old ballet teacher used this cheese quote by Agnes de Mille "When you perform you are out of your self, larger and more potent, more beautiful. You are for minutes heroic. This is power. This is is glory on earth. A
