A favorite book in our house is "What Makes a Baby?" by @corysilverberg .
.
It's a simple, colorful way to explain how babies are born. It's inclusive language makes this a great book for families that may have adopted, or used IVF or a surrogate!

Honored to be listed with so many wonderful sex ed resources for families! There are more sources of information out there than you may realize...check these out for tips on talking to children about bodies, consent, porn, and more! Also, @theminoritysexreport is one of my favorite places to look for info on the intersections of sexuality and race, and learning how sex education isn't complete without racial justice.

I just got this book today and it's already one of my favorites! @cisforconsent walks through an evening where Finn navigates consent issues with family and friends.

Thank you, @sexstuffwithkristin for introducing me to this one!

I'm so honored to have been invited to guest lecture at @butleru on early childhood sex education. I'm also really jealous I can't take the rest of @jeanadances 's class on sex education! 😂

I love @jayneensandersauthor books (with @educate2empower ), and this is a work checklist to evaluate books you have in your home or classroom libraries!

4 Steps for Teaching Consent:

1. Many of us are out of sync with our own bodies...we don't trust our own feelings or gut reactions. We can help children learn to trust theirs by validating their emotions, respecting their likes and dislikes, and helping to identify how emotions may manifest physically in our bodies.
.
2. Children should be able to say no to unwanted physical affection or touch (the exception being for hygiene and medical situations). That means not being obligated to give hugs, participate in tickling, or even sit on Santa's lap.
.
3. "May I give you a hug?" instead of "Will you give me a hug?" - what are the differences those two messages send? How do we recognize nonverbal responses (pets can be a great way to teach this - does that cat really want to be picked up right now?)? Asking isn't a one-time thing - it's ongoing ("Are you still having fun being tickled? Should we stop or keep going?")
.
4. Validate disappointment, but also use empathy to consider the other person's feelings. What will we choose to do with our disappointment that doesn't hurt others?

Repost @sexpluszine
Consent is ongoing. Checking in to see that a child is still enjoying tickling, snuggling, etc doesn't lessen the enjoyment!

I chatted with @mashable about helping children process and handle rejection. We often overlook this aspect of consent conversations, but it's important to practice handling difficult emotions in ways that don't harm ourselves or others.

Where do babies come from?!?!?
.
In the Teen Titans Go movie, there's an end credits scene where a character tells kids to ask their parents where babies come from. Some parents aren't happy.
.
But, what a great opportunity to have a conversation with children!
.
Whether you've seen the movie or not, here's a three step guide to answering The Question.

What we do now matters. How we take care of, interact with, speak to, and advocate for children matters. .
Many of us feel broken, but some children have higher rates of adverse childhood experiences than others. Some children are born in places, to families, or with skin colors that put the starting line paces back from others.
.
What are we doing to bring equity to childhood?

I've been processing what to say, but @annehathaway says it well...

The murder of Nia Wilson- may she rest in the power and peace she was denied here- is unspeakable AND MUST NOT be met with silence.  She is not a hash tag; she was a black woman and she was murdered in cold blood by a white man.

White people- including me, including you- must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS.  White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence.
Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves- how “decent” are we really?  Not in our intent, but in our actions?  In our lack of action?
Peace and prayers and JUSTICE for Nia and the Wilson family xx

You know the ol' "the clitoris has twice as many nerve endings as the penis" thing? It's not true. They've got the same amount (6,000-8,000). The issue is that the clit has them packed into a much smaller area, making it extra sensitive.
.
.
The whole thing about penises having 4,000 nerve endings was from the 90s and has since been disproven (many, many times). It still manages to be one of those things we (yes, even us sex educators) perpetuate because we assume it's true.
