Oil on Canadian Redwood
Oil paint has allowed me to expand on my visual language and investigate the power of the painterly gesture, which lies in the relation between the paint stroke and the clarity and expression of colour. There was a clear tension between concept and image, the conceptual and formal layering of a painting. My work requires an effort on the part of the spectator, I want questions to be raised and have my artwork evade these answers. I explored process painting as a means to examine and be playful with oil paint, to start to question the physicality of the work and understand how to make different marks whilst reflecting on the directions that the marks move in.
