Dear Technics SL-1200s: Today (3/20) is “RECORD DAY”, 67 years ago, the first LP was sold in Japan. Since you were invented in 1972, you bravely traveled to USA a few years later. They say that the Japanese inventors were very upset how roughly their inventions were treated by the Americans, who were looping records and making scratch noises at parties. Little did they know that they were a big part of the birth of Hip Hop music, which would influence the whole world for decades….
If it wasn’t for Hip Hop, I would have not existed. It taught me how to create something from nothing. The reason I have this special bond with my friends, is because we all looked up to the same thing and spent time brushing each other’s skills. It showed me what community was. Because I felt protected by Hip Hop, I was not afraid to take risks…. And one day, I realized that when I DJed, I could add just a little bit of extra happiness to peoples lives.
The more music I get to know, the more I realize how much I don’t know... and the more I practice, the more I get absorbed in it. Turntablism definitely doesn't happen overnight. I cannot count how many times I burst out in tears not being able to make the right sound. Even now where I am a professional DJ, practicing is a bitch. In this era where anyone could be a DJ with a simple software and a USB stick, I sometimes wonder who the hell I am trying to impress using turntables forever. Then I realize that I am only doing it to challenge myself. Because the turntable, is nothing but an instrument. It is what made me.
When I heard that SL-1200 is no longer going to be sold in 2010, my heart sank as if I couldn't save a best friends life, and I had no hope for future. So lost, I even questioned if I had just spent half of my life and energy towards something that had no future. But when Technics came back with a new model in 2016, I felt so happy it felt like my best friend was resurrected. And in 2018, I would have never imagined to be selected as one of 30 world-class turntablists for a project for Technics, along with the scratch god @djqbert and @dstyles, and of course our Japanese hero @djkentaro and more.
