Program for teens and adults - Please join us on Saturday, May 19, from 1pm - 2:30pm in our community room to hear about “Hiking the Appalachian Trail” with experienced hiker Sam Ducharme. Registration is happening now.

Those who attend this program will be treated to a modern day adventure. Sam Ducharme set out on a 2180 mile, 14 state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin Maine. During his six month journey he documented the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the wildlife, the hardships encountered on the trail, as well as the people, culture and humanity at its finest. Come join him as he takes you through the trail towns, over the mountaintops and through the backcountry. The images and stories will leave you with a renewed awe of the beauty of our country and its people.
See his gear, how he cooked, and hear what it is like sleeping in a hammock for six months through three seasons.
You will also hear how Sam returned to the trail the following year, connecting with aspiring Thru Hikers, paying it forward, and his return to the summit of Katahdin one year later.
Sam Ducharme is a retired K9 Officer and is a lifelong resident of Connecticut. He has two adult sons, both serving in the United States Air Force. As an avid outdoorsman, and finding the empty-nest, Sam decided to buy a backpack and a plane ticket to Georgia. From there, he started walking north. With no prior backpacking experience, he learned on the trail. Gear, trail nutrition, enduring the elements, and the logistics involved in a long distance backpacking trip were hard lessons. After 20 years working within Connecticut’s prisons, the search for a positive recharge resulted in a life changing journey. #appalachiantrail #hiking #hikingadventures #wildlife #adventure #nature #otislibrary #otislibrarynorwich

We are asking for your help. In the preliminary budget accepted by the City Council on May 7 and for the third year in a row, Otis Library’s support was reduced, this time by $50,000. There are clear indications that more reductions are imminent. Otis is nationally recognized for its leadership in the library profession and the quality of its services. It is Norwich's de facto community center and works diligently to attract residents to the city center by promoting a safe and attractive environment. Otis works in the community, providing programs for residents who cannot visit the library and schools and participating in community events. A second reduction would be devastating. We are asking individuals who understand our contribution to Norwich's quality of life to assist us in one of several ways.
There is a public hearing on the budget on Monday May 14 at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. While we encourage supporters to attend the meeting and speak on our behalf, there are other ways to communicate a message of support. Contacting members of the Council directly by phone, email and appointment have considerable efficacy. For your convenience, the link to the Norwich City Council page follows this letter. We hope you will make your opinion known and help the library avoid further impediments to serving the residents of Norwich. We encourage you to enlist the support of other residents who value the contributions Otis Library makes to the quality of life in Norwich.

On April 27, the 15th Annual Millie & Martin Shapiro Author Series event featuring an Evening with John R. Bohrer was held at The Spa at Norwich Inn. The evening featured a silent auction, delicious dinner, keynote address and author signing all to benefit Otis Library.

John R. Bohrer is a reporter, historian, and television news producer. He has prepared anchors for high-profile interviews and tackled investigations, and his research has been cited by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and many more. His writing has appeared in New York magazine, The New Republic, Politico, and USA Today, among others. The Revolution of Robert Kennedy: From Power to Protest after JFK is his first book.

If you joined us for this wonderful community event, we hope you enjoyed it. If you didn’t have a chance to attend, please consider it next year! It is definitely worth it! @thespaatnorwich #otislibrary #otislibrarynorwich #johnbohrer #author #booksigning #fundraiser #eveningwithanauthor #librariesofinstagram
