I wish the guest room still looked like this. But life is messy and sometimes the guest room is the place you put things to get to them later. And if you're chronically ill, sometimes later is in a few months and that's okay. photo for @moglea.

After failing at resurfacing our coffee table with concrete, @austinhyler had a great idea to replace the surface with piece of stone countertop from the @habitatforhumanity ReStore. The how-to post is on Design*Sponge today if you're interested.

We met after most of my best friends were years deep in marriage. And the thing is, I don't feel like I missed out on anything by not meeting him sooner. I cherish the time I had on my own. It was defining in the best way. I learned how to rely on God and struggle through the possibility that singleness wouldn't be just a season but my life. God was faithful by answering my prayers with no. He was loving me well even when I felt forgotten. Austin is my best friend and the best husband. I'm thankful to get to experience life unfold with him and I'm glad he didn't show up sooner than he did. Life is weird and so good.

Yesterday morning was in the mid-50s! I always mourn the end of summer but yesterday Austin and I went on a walk after breakfast and I could finally wear my new @sheabecker wrap and a pair jeans. It was perfect out. I kind of hate summer clothes just as much as I love hot summer weather. Shorts just feel awkward. My cooler weather outfits never change for 9 months of the year (my friends can validate this). I'm not an adventurous dresser. My outfits almost always include some sort of basic tee or sweater half tucked into high-waisted jeans, a pair of flats and a scarf or long necklace. I like things simple I guess. I'm sad for summer to end in a month but yesterday morning made me more excited for fall because I'll get to wear my favorite things EVERYDAY. No more weird shorts. ๐Ÿ™Œ

I stumble over my words whenever someone asks me what I do. I kind of just word vomit something about writing interior design articles, photographing paper goods and styling props and rooms-which usually results in a confused, dead expression from the person I'm meeting. Then I try to change the subject. But it makes sense to me. I like beautiful compositions. I like sharing beautiful content. I like things to feel polished, done, special. My skill set might not be a necessity but you'd be surprised what goes into breathtaking photos behind the scenes. So I guess I'm okay with not having a 5 second elevator pitch and being a bit awkward. I like doing all the things. And I hope you like your job(s) too. ๐Ÿ’›

Our spare room has been many things in the year I've lived here and now it's 100% ready for guests and 100% a functional dressing room for me. It has always had my hanging clothes but last week we upgraded our living room unit. The dresser that had been in the living room is now in the guest room with all of my clothing and accessories all in one spot. So. Much. Easier. And I like I can make it a little more personal in here than I would in our common spaces. Hooray for everything finally finding a home in our house and for simpler living. ๐ŸŽ‰

Saturday living room views. Filling our home with artwork that calls us to leave the couch and head outside. #fujixpro2

The last month @austinhyler have been doing joint projects every week. It's so fun. It has been a combination of food, interiors and editorial shoots. He is my favorite to work with. This project was for an apartment complex in central Iowa that wanted to appeal to mid-twenties to mid-thirties so they had me stage it and Austin shoot it. More of this, please. ๐Ÿ’›

Resourcefulness is one of my favorite qualities in myself and others. I love it when a problem arises and creativity starts to flow. Designing my dorm rooms and then homes on the cheap over the last 10 years has taught me a lot about what I can get for my time and effort that I might not be able to afford with my bank account. Read more about it in my essay on Design*Sponge today.

I was going to take a picture of how pretty our living room looks with our new rug and repurposed coffee table but Mae wanted to be part of the action. I have a feeling this is her new favorite spot.

this day last year.

Happy anniversary to my best friend. Being your wife, partner, test shot model, and biggest fan is the absolute best. Your love and support are unending and I'm so grateful to get to call you mine.
