When I was younger, I would try and bring magazines home with whatever pop culture icon on it that I wanted to be like at the time, but my mom just wouldn't have it. She would take the magazines away from me, and hand me books and stories on people like Martin Luther King Jr and say, "Lauren, this is the kind of person I need you to look up to, because this is the kind of person you can grow up to be. People like him are ones that change the world for the better." Because of my amazing mother (who I thought was very evil at the time she was stealing my magazines) I grew up with this incredible man as one of my hero's. I fed off of his courage and longed and still long to be like him.
Incredible humans like MLK are food for my soul and inspire me in my life. I hope we all can be more like him. What an extraordinary human.
(The other moral of this story is listen to your mother, because she is always right even when you think she's a total meanie head.)
