I was truly honored to attend the funeral today of a true American hero whose life literally defined public service. I was humbled to be part of such a memorable tribute to a man who will always represent the very best of America.
I first met President George H.W. Bush nearly 50 years ago, in January of 1969, when I was 12 years old. I was standing with my dad on the floor of the U.S House of Representatives as both men were sworn into Congress.
Over a decade later and fresh out of college, I became a Chairman of Youth for Reagan-Bush in 1980, and was involved in both the reelection campaign in 1984 and in President Bush’s election as president in 1988. Just before the 1992 election, I had the honor of visiting President Bush in the White House when I was a young nominee for Congress.
President George H.W. Bush is someone I have respected and admired my entire life. As our nation mourns the loss of this incredible patriot, we can all learn something from the powerful example he set as a leader, as a husband, and as a father. May he rest in peace.
