Guto, Carlos Augusto Correia Paixão, sends a sincere thank you to everyone for the concern and prayers for his well being after the brutal impact from yesterdays final. He also extends a heartfelt congratulations to Thiago Gomes Lessa for his victory and success at Kozakov and to all the organizers, marshals and staff.
The final was a spectacular example of DH racing. All 4 racers demonstrated why they are the best in the world. About 400 meters after the technical turns in the forest, Guto was holding the lead. At this time, Thiago Gomes Lessa was drafting with precision and went for the pass about 300 meters before the final right turn. Guto responded by leaning hard left to pick up Thiago's draft. His lean was very close to the edge of the road and when the board was partially off the pavement it was too much and too late. Off his board at high speed, Guto collided with a road sign. I believe he had Gods protection considering the lack hay bails at this very vulnerable location. The ONE hay bail that was placed before it may very well have saved his life. He was evacuated to Leberac Hospital via helicopter and is currently sedated and under observation.
He is doing well but in much pain from the impact. Carlo suffered trauma to his hip, ribs, left arm and a mild fracture to the transverse of a lower vertebrae. This is a benign or not threatening fracture thank God.
Carlos Augusto Correia Paixão, his family (Melina and Steven), Myself and my wife (Mari Fletcher) thank everyone for the prayers and concern. We especially thank the paramedics, pilot and first responders for their grace under pressure.
