Mistake or lesson? // in making jewelry most mistakes turn into lessons. You melt things and adjust the flame. Rings are the wrong size, you adjust for silver stretching when you hammer the wire round. Enamels aren’t always the color described or shown on the samples they come with. // mistake: this enamel should fire the color of the dried flowers in the photo // lesson, when instead it consistently fired this frosty green, I embraced this mistake. I named this hue first frost and rolled with it. Now, I test colors, how they look on raw metal, layered with other colors, or applied over flux. If a pink turns yellow, as it often does I embrace it. To be honest, my craft would be boring without these happy mistakes. And it wouldn’t be life if I didn’t learn a lesson from it. // lesson, embrace the unknown and roll with it // in craft // in life // in love // //

Day eleven of #marchmeetthemaker // reducing waste // all of my failed attempts, sandpaper, buffs and scrap get sent off for refining. Even the silver trapped in grit gets melted. One of these days I’ll have my own clothes dryer, wash my studio clothes separately and send the lint off too. Until then, these are my offerings. //

My product range... my collections have subtle variations and continue to grow into pieces which will become future keepsakes. All have a simple aesthetic which, oddly enough, took me a while to embrace as I transitioned from ‘art’ jewelry to production work. I find lately I’m blending those lines, which makes me happiest. Here you can see I use a simple shape to show off texture and layers of color. A simple structure encases a bead. A more elaborate ring hints at mimicking nature. Vintage elements are given a new life as silver castings. Finally we have my favorite, hand-cut, not perfectly matched shapes to show off color studies. //

In honor of #nationalwomensday I’d like to reflect on my grandmothers. They were both independent women, working and raising a family. Both loved making things and shared their love of craft with me. They encouraged my drawing, taught me how to refinish furniture, had me help fix things around the house, we did crafts together, read books, swam, walked, played cards, ate lots of iced cream, and did my homework together. They weren’t just grandmothers, they were my best friends. After my youngest grandmother passed I found two chicory flowers between the graves of both of my grandmothers. Later I learned that these flowers bloom for one day. In honor of them I have two of these flowers and two sprigs of rosemary tattooed on my shoulder, a simple gesture in comparison to their impact on me. Every time I struggle to smile, doubt my strength, think I’m not talented, laugh so hard I cry, play outside instead of hiding inside, or put a little too much sugar in something I think of these strong women. They showered me with love, positivity and endless support. I wouldn’t be a maker without them. It took me almost 40 years to realize the roots of independence they were nurturing. For them I am grateful. //

Day seven of #marchmeetthemaker // the less glam side // here’s one not so shiny example of a hot mess. Some days you are hot, but one can be too hot at the soldering block. Here lies what was to become a stacking ring. It now looks like a match. A burnt, fire-scaled covered match. It’s in the scrap bin and an actual shiny ring replaced it. Live, learn, move on. //

Day six of #marchmeetthemaker full-time or part-time? I call it never enough time. As a one woman show I’m forever thinking I should be... photographing pieces, listing work, promoting on social media, networking in person, answering emails (sorry I haven’t), designing new work, opening my shoppe daily, getting orders out in a timely manner (I’m failing hard at this)... in reality I may be closer to part-time as a studio jeweler than I would like to be. The hard truth is being an craftswoman gets more and more difficult with every passing year. There’s more competition than ever, the economy isn’t awesome, and at the end of the day I can’t make ends meet doing this jewelry thing. I have a new side gig I love and I’m grateful I work for a woman who appreciates me. It’s just as dreamy a job as making jewelry is. So, would I change anything? Hell yeah, I’d work this fast always. But also, hell no, I’m happiest using my hands to create. It’s hard, it’s stressful, it’s all consuming but ALL of this is made with my heart, mind, hands, and soul with a side of blood and sweat. // if you’re wondering, I am cleaning the inside of a ring //
