The great mind behind the Gel Lyte III is Shigeyuki Mitsui, a Japanese nativ, born in the north of the country, who joined ASICS Tiger in 1984.
Being definitely one of the most recognizable silhouettes from ASICS Tiger to ever release, the Gel Lyte III made a huge impact in the running industry in the 90’s with an even lighter shoe then the previous Gel Lyte series, a trio-density compression moulded EVA midsole and with the split tongue, which gives the silhouette an extra plus in comfort and aesthetics.
Even tough most of you know the split tongue from the Gel Lyte III, this iconic feature had already been seen on the Gel LD Racer in 1989.
The concept behind the Gel Lyte III was to create something that hadn’t been seen yet in the market. A running shoe with the most modern technology and functions, but furthermore with nice and colorful aesthetics.
In the mid 2000’s the silhouette gave its comeback as a collaboration with New York based sneaker retailer David Z. @ronniefieg who worked back then for his uncle at the store, was the responsible to design the “252 Pack”.
What happens from then on is history…
