July 24th Memoriam Spotlight: Peter Yates was a professional race car driver and a race team manager before turning to acting, stage managing, theatre director, editor, and assistant director. He directed episodes of "The Saint" and "Secret Agent" before his first feature film "Robbery" (1967). Steve McQueen was so impressed by the car chase in that movie that he requested Yates to direct "Bullitt" (1968) which set the standard for car chase sequences - which few have matched. But the former racer proved that he was much more than a "fast car scene" expert with such varied features as the marvelous "Murphy's War" (1971), "The Hot Rock" (1972), "The Deep" (1977), "Breaking Away" (1979), and one of his best "The Dresser" (1983). Yates even had a go at the science fiction/fantasy craze of the 80's with "Krull" (1983) which has equal parts fans and critics.
