#ThrowbackThursday 40 years ago today my father was seriously injured in a crash on Tidewater Dr near Wigeon Rd in Norfolk that disabled him for life (just a few months after I took this shot at The Old Dominion Paper Company on Progress Road). The Excel Meat company truck driver that hit him had no license, and the jury awarded dad 100,000 (and Excel went out of business soon after). Ironically I was recently declared permanently disabled due to injuries stemming from another crash in 1984. Possibly taking the "like father, like son" concept a bit too far......except for the money; couldn't sue the drugged-up 35-year old E-1 Navy twit who slammed into me at 100mph because my injuries didn't manifest themselves for two days.

September 21st Memoriam Spotlight: if you follow these posts you may find yourself thinking "Wow, I had forgotten all about - fill in the blank", even for actors who were big stars not that long ago, but fleeting fame is nothing new; for most people the name John Bunny might evoke either a blank stare or images of a cartoon character, but for over five years between 1909 and 1914 John was one of the best-known silent movie stars - over 200 films - with a huge fan base, and one of the first to be the subject of mass merchandising with figurines and dolls bearing his girth and likeness. The Bunny Theatre in New York City was named for him, and when he died in 1915, The New York Times predicted John would forever be remembered as a movie star; but in less than ten years, Bunny was mostly forgotten and today he is mainly known by film historians and silent movie aficionados.

September 21st Birthday Spotlight: What do Peter Pan, escaping a city-sized prison, Michael Myers, and the Star League have in common? Nick Castle! One of the best-and-least-known people in motion pictures, Nick has kept a low profile while creating some of the most popular and iconic movie moments. As an actor, Nick creeped us out as "The Shape"/"Michael Myers" in "Halloween" (1978). He co-wrote the "Escape From New York" (1981) screenplay with director John Carpenter, wrote and directed "TAG: The Assassination Game" (1982), wrote and directed "The Boy Who Could Fly" (1986), wrote and directed "Tap" (1989), wrote the screen story for Spielberg's "Hook" (1991), and directed the marvelous and precedent-setting (in widespread use of computer graphics) "The Last Starfighter" (1984) as well as many other features.
