When you get up before sunrise, you can reap the rewards of dawn... Saw this mama and baby black bear crossing the road at 6am and I'm so thankful it was us who did. Baby ran straight out into the road in front of our vehicle, I saw him and had John slam on the breaks, when they reached the other side of the road, mama gave us some serious side eye before carrying on.
After our morning hike, I reported the sighting to a park ranger (this was in between two campgrounds, mind you), she informed me that she knew this family and turns out baby bear used to be plural but the second cub was hit by a car, luckily she was picked up by park rangers and it's likely that she'll make a full recovery. Just another reason to observe speed limit signs in state parks... they're not always for you, often they're for them.
