Happy International Women’s Day. I’ve been seeing everybody’s posts and it’s really really moved me today. There are some who will say - we don’t need a day, but, the sad truth is that we do. We are women of privilege and we often think that feminism is a battle no longer required. But that’s because we come from privilege. We need to fight now more than ever, to raise our voices and sing together - everyday, not just today. We also, need to put our money where our mouths, insta-posts, and hearts are. Here’s something I’ve been thinking. As a woman, as an artist I have had the ability to tell my story, and on Woman’s Day today, I want to support more women and give them the chance to tell their stories. In countries like ours, like Pakistan, like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Lebanon and Palestine, women are kept out of public spaces. It’s time to reclaim public space and make it genderless. The @fearlesscollective by my friend @shiloshivsuleman works with marginalised communities of women across the world to make public monuments of love, beauty and resistance. They turn ordinary streets into empowering art spaces involving communities and setting examples for the young women there. Their art has tremendous impact and influence on girls and today I urge you to take two minutes out, check out their campaign on @Kickstarter and go donate. Give give give even if it’s just $10 (₹650). Art is important. And women’s voices in art are very very important. Especially in the countries and communities we speak of. Honestly, I wish I had seen Shilo painting the walls of my neighbourhood when I was a little girl. So go click on the link in my bio. Thank you.
