@Regrann from @amivitale - Want to support girls' leadership and empowerment? Like and share this post and Disney Worldwide Services will donate $1 to @girlupcampaign!

I am honored to share my photos from the #DreamBigPrincess photography campaign! Ruth Lekgpanai is the first woman in Africa who is a "giraffe guard" for the “Twiga Walinzi,” a brilliant team that works as field researchers and protectors of endangered reticulated giraffe in northern Kenya. @nrt_kenya @sandiegozoo It was announced in September 2016 that the giraffe, an icon of Africa, is in peril — the population of this majestic species has quietly dropped by 40 percent across Africa, from 140,000 in the late 1990s to around 85,000 today. Ruth is on the front lines of protecting this beautiful animal, gathering more information on giraffe populations and developing a photo identification database to track individual giraffes. She manages a network of 120 camera traps and conducts snare removal patrols. It has been inspiring getting to spend time with this remarkable young woman and learn what inspires her to dream big! From August 15-October 11, 2017, Disney Worldwide Services will donate US $1 for any public post of a photo using #DreamBigPrincess or like of such a post on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, for a minimum donation of US $500,000 and a maximum of US $1 million to Girl Up, the United Nations Foundation’s program supporting adolescent girls’ leadership and empowerment.annie - #regrann

@Regrann from @natgeo - Photo by @pedromcbride // A baby, orphaned elephant follows one of its new care-takers at the @R.E.S.C.U.E in northern Kenya. Elephants who lost their mothers due to drought, poaching, or other human wildlife conflicts, are now ending up here and being saved by Samburu warriors. One caretaker says he used to be scared of elephants, ‘"but now I loves them". Not only is this wildlife orphanage on @nrt_kenya trying to save and re-wild wild orphans, but it is bringing new jobs to a landscape challenged by the grip of severe drought. @Regrann from @r.e.s.c.u.e - Shaba, just shy of two years old in this photo, is the proxy matriarch of the younger Reteti orphans. She is teaching them how to forage in the wild. Under the eye of caretakers, she leads her small herd into the bush outside the sanctuary, stripping leaves, tasting bark, pushing down small trees, taking mud baths.

Another photo from the wonderful @amivitale. Her beautiful story about Reteti is in the current issue of @natgeo on newsstands worldwide.

Rip Ibong @Regrann from @lewa_wildlife - Last week saw the death of one of our oldest rhinos, Ibong.

The elderly rhino tripped and fell, severely injuring himself. By the time we got to him, it was already too late. Ibong is one of Lewa’s pioneering rhinos and has greatly contributed to the growth of the population that began with just 15 animals. Today, Lewa is home to 61 black rhinos. The Conservancy has also reintroduced the species to previously inhabited areas such as @boranaconservancy to the west, and Sera Community Conservancy to the north.

Ibong was one of the most dominant bulls on the Conservancy and until recently, had managed to protect his territory from younger and stronger males. We will miss his tenacious spirit.

Kwaheri, Ibong! He lived a life every rhino in the world should – long, safe and free of poaching.

@Regrann from @amivitale - Video by @amivitale. A mother elephant with her baby near Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife) in Kenya. Lewa is a model for sustainable conservation in the region and is home to several hundred elephants, depending on the time of year and migration. Elephant populations in the area are threatened by poaching but also drought and environmental conditions. While orphaned elephants discovered by the community used to be transported hundreds of miles away to Kenya's only elephant orphanage near Nairobi, now nearby Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) can rehabilitate baby elephants in order to reunite them with their wild herds. Read more about Reteti in my @NatGeo story: https://tinyurl.com/kvopc69

@Regrann from @natgeowild - #DidYouKnow Both black and white rhinoceroses are actually gray. They are different not in color but in lip shape. The black rhino has a pointed upper lip, while its white relative has a squared lip. The difference in lip shape is related to the animals' diets. Black rhinos are browsers that get most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes. They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the branches. White rhinos graze on grasses, walking with their enormous heads and squared lips lowered to the ground. | Video by @runningwildmediaannie - #regrann #nowyouknow #savetherhino
