For the first time in my life I woke up this am, put the news on and felt completely hopeless.
The government, Supreme Court, environment. I’ve never felt that way in regards to this country. I truly love America. It’s an incredible country. I’ve been lucky enough to have been to 30 out of the 50 states in this country and it is a life-changing and awe-inspiring experience. Each state, with its own personality, accent, palette, decorations, music, food, is a marvelous example of human nature and culture. It's absolutely magical that all of that exists within our borders.
But, I hear so many of my peers talk about how fucked up this country is, how much they hate it and feel abandoned by it, how awful the government is…etc. And while I completely and fully understand (that same hopelessness punched me in the gut this morning) I also want to remind all of us, myself mostly, that living in this country is such a gift. People fight and die every single day to come here and we cannot give up on it. Right now it looks grim. It feels grim. There’s an uphill battle that looks unbeatable and yet when we look back at the history of this country there is a pattern of the “good guys” winning. Through hard work and determination women won the right to vote, the civil rights act passed, DACA was overturned, same-sex marriage was legalized. And yes, there is a LONG way to go for women, POC, the LGBTQ community but we have to look back on those victories and see them the way they are, as victories. We won then. We did. The people who stood up for our fellow citizens, who demanded to be heard even when we were being told to be quiet, we won. And we can win again, we have to keep fighting.
There are 29 days until midterms. Get registered, learn about your candidates, and VOTE. Vote for the candidate who wants to protect the rights of ALL people, not just you, who will put the environment before business, who will look at that ugly orange fuck in the White House and say “no, not this time”. Vote for the candidate who is best fit to help run ALL of us, not just your town or district, but who can take their seat as a representative of THIS country.
