I am eternally #thankful for Dave Bry, who was an extraordinary mentor and friend. He was the kind of writer and editor whom every young writer and editor hopes they’ll have the good fortune of working with. He took the time to listen, to discuss, and to teach, setting an example that I’ve tried to follow. Working with Dave on my 2005 @xxl @killermike piece will always be a career highlight. He brought the absolute best out of me and I let him know how much I treasured him and our relationship. Years later, he reached out and told me that my story was still the best piece he’d read on Mike and that it was a career highlight for him as well. I’m not certain he knew exactly how much that — or the time he took out of his life to grab lunch, talk, or write me a grad school recommendation — meant to me, but it meant a fucking lot. All these weeks later, I’m still just coming to grips with his death. I wish there were another opportunity to work together or just bullshit over some bourbon. I always will, but I’m so tremendously thankful that Dave was and remains a part of my life.
