The McCloud River is located near the top of California, north of the Sierra Nevada and at the southern end of the Cascade Range, in a scenic canyon beneath the rugged slopes of 14,000-foot Mount Shasta.
I stayed at the Ah-Di-Nah campground, which is near the PCT and just up river from the Nature Conservancy area on the McCloud. The site was used by both regional Wintu Native Americans and, beginning in 1896, by the Whittier family of San Francisco who used it as a hunting and fishing retreat.
Little is left of what once was a thriving villa. The land was passed through other owners before being acquired by the Hearst Family in 1936. The Hearst Family donated the site to the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in 1965. #mtshasta #mccloudriver #PCT #flyfishing #californialove #californiaadventure #river #explore
