The heavy rains that ravaged the city of Chennai, India took a heavy toll on all it residents – especially the slum dwellers.
Sheela (middle) knows this all too well.
Before the rains, Sheela’s family was like any other family in the slums. Her father, the only earning member of the family brought home barely enough of an income to feed and clothe three children.
Despite this, they somehow managed to make a life for themselves.
Tragically, when the floods swept thorough Chennai, Sheela lost her father.
Not only did they have to cope with the loss of their father but Sheela and the rest of her family were unable to go back to their little house in the slums.
After many days, they were finally able to go back to their home. Additional difficulties awaited them on their return.
Since Sheela’s mother had not worked before, she did not have a job to go back to. Without a job, she did not know how she was going to provide for the children.
The Hand of Hope feeding program stepped in and welcomed Sheela with open arms. A regular member of the feeding program, she is provided with one nutritious meal every day.
The staff also provides her with educational assistance and Sheela is eager to learn. The Hand of Hope feeding program also reached out to her family during the floods and provided them with shelter, food and clothing.
Her mother is grateful for all that Hand of Hope has done and believes that Sheela will be able to make the most of this chance and work towards building a joyful future. #handofhope #givehope #missions #feeding
