PART TWO

After working in engineering and consulting, I asked myself, how do I turn an eighteen year old with no skills and university degree to a bank manager?
_

The answer: small businesses.
_

Generation Enterprise is a non-profit that takes the classroom to the workplace. We want our youth to have hands on practical training while earning an income and becoming productive members of society. We also want to teach businesses how to scale and this can only be done through their employees.
_

We test ran our model by starting a cleaning company called Zest. After the success of Zest, we created ScaleNav that allows businesses replicate the same scaling model over and over again.
Of the 100 million businesses in Africa, 37 million of which are Nigerian, there is a huge pool of employers that can engage our youth more efficiently.
So what does ScaleNav do?
Firstly, the employer has to write and articulate their vision to their employees. This creates transparency between both parties.
Secondly, the employer has to create a clear pathway. Can your staff see what salary and skills required at each level?
Finally, the employer can manage their staff's performance. The star rating system allows each company to input 5 main areas they want to focus on. Before payroll each month, they will review each employee's ratings and use it to determine their pay.
_

Today, we have signed up 25 African businesses in Lagos, Nairobi and Accra.

PART ONE

This week, we sat with @bunmiotegbade, the founder of @generation_enterprise and @zest_hq. Bunmi is pushing for African dominance. He believes the continent cannot continue to play catch up in an ever changing world, rather, we should capitalize on our youth and leverage on the skills of the West.

_

I have been thinking about African dominance since I was 15. The older I got, I became more aware that something wasn't right. This was further cemented when I moved to America for my first degree.

_

As a child, I was an under performer, I even had to repeat primary 3. When I lost my mum, I knew that I wanted things to change. I switched schools from Lagos State University Staff School to Redeemer's International School and it was a completely different experience. In my new school, the teachers genuinely cared. They took their time with me and within 7 months; I had improved. I ended up being the head boy of that school!
_

This was the first time I saw the importance of a nurturing environment, something we were lacking here. We don't realise the tremendous opportunity that lies within our youth. We underestimate them and give them very little, forgetting that when they fail, they'll learn and bounce back quickly.
_

So how did we start? I came back to Nigeria in 2007 for a 6 month research that focused on introducing self driving tractors to our farm. However; what I saw was that we needed to engage our 35 million youth.

Our #WCW today is none other than the beautiful and talented Bolanle.
Bolanle is producing her first documentary titled, "God's wives." She also loves supporting widows and even sits on the board that caters to them.
And of course, she also knows how to slay with her #JokoEdu bag.

We had such a wonderful time with our #PowerMan, JR Kanu. He's the founder of @findreach, a tool that helps you manage and grow your money. He cracked us nonstop and shared several nuggets of wisdom with us.

_

I am a Jos boy, born and raised, and I even speak Hausa. I lived in Jos until I was 17, then I went off to Calvin College in Michigan. My parents did not have a lot of money so it was a miracle going off to college abroad. My mum was an office messenger until her employer sponsored her OND and HND degrees in accounting. She later became a civil servant. My dad did business, reselling aluminum and tin to foreigners. He attended college the same time I did, earning a law degree for himself.
_

Back to college, I got a $20,000+ scholarship but we still had to cough up $10,000 each year. My parents supported me in the best way they could. They paid a $2,500 deposit to the school, gave me $240 when I was traveling and bought my ticket with borrowed money. The rest of the money, I was going to have to figure it out with God.
_

And God was faithful! I majored in Mechanical Engineering. I got an amazing job that paid $11.11/hr, twice what other campus jobs were paying! Although it wasn't easy, I still got $9,500 in scholarships and ended up even overpaying the college in my final year.

I've worked in several places before Reach. But how did Reach happen? With our very limited resources, my mother taught us to be fiscally responsible. After each market trip, she would write all her expenses to track them and make sure she hadn't been cheated. I kept that habit and today, I still live within my means. At Reach, we want to help people track their expenses and encourage them to become more financially responsible.
_

What would I say is my current challenge?
Resting! Being a sole founder isn't easy but I have learnt to listen to my body. Look at Reach, it wasn't just my idea. It was God's idea and since He never sleeps or slumbers, He can take the wheel. So if I need to take a break, I don't feel guilty about it because I know that it is God's business and He will take care of it.
