Here's the second of a few shots that @toesforward emailed me to feature today. Corina is from Australia and she inspired today's theme.
.
This shot makes it pretty clear that sometimes you can break the "Kids should smile in pictures" rule. Nice job @vosluba. πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ».
.
Good evening from Atlanta everyone. @joshjohnson here. Our theme today is "Rule Breakers" and our tag is #jj_forum_1852 .

Sometimes breaking the rules is a great way to make someone stop and think and even maybe crack smile. A disembodied arm is out of place, doesn't feel right. But that's the point here isn't it? πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ». Nice work @aarondeppe. Thanks to @jj_editor_dave for the assist on the feature.
.
I love Aaron's account and if you have any taste you will too. πŸ˜‰ So go check it out and tell him Russ the dog and I sent you over! πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ»πŸΆ. - Josh.

Here's the first of a few shots that @toesforward emailed me for a feature today. Corina is from Australia and she inspired today's theme with her amazing "Grampa and the the surfer" shot.
.
I love her choice of this picture from @mayphotodesign. I'd say this shot kind of breaks my usual rule of "clearly define your subject". In the end, the lone person battling the storm is the subject, but it does take you a while to get there, doesn't it? And that's the pull of this one for me. So much going on. Kind of like the swirling energy of a north eastern snow storm. Great job.
.
Good afternoon from Atlanta everyone. @joshjohnson here. Our theme today is "Rule Breakers" and our tag is #jj_forum_1852 .
.

It's almost entirely out of focus and we're given only the view of the world of a small dog. Kneecaps and street curbs. Somehow though it's still a wonderfully compelling shot. I'd say breaking the "rules" paid off for @franko68. I'd argue that a good part Frank's account is a study in breaking the rules. You're a star in this theme my friend. πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ».

"I was sitting on the sand shooting at the Australian Open of Surfing when I zoomed out completely and was trying to get more of a landscape surfing image. I was shooting, slowly and carefully. Framing the image I had constructed in my mind, the clouds were perfect. The contrast between the water and the sky adorned the surfer so well. Then a man walked into my frame... and for a moment I was annoyed but then I saw how well the older looking man contrasted with the surfer in the background.
.
Later on, I revisited the image and had more of a connection with it. To me, it felt like it broke every rule in photography with such great flow. I believe people seek these type of images because they allow the imagination to run wild, photography is an art. Art isn't necessarily about following rules." - @toesforward.

Hi guys. Josh here. Big thanks to @toesforward, Corina Vargas, for writing that up for me and for agreeing to help me out with today's theme. She'll be working with me and the @jj_editors to select some of the features.
.
Let's use Corina's image to kick off a "Rule Breaker" image theme. Our tag today is #jj_forum_1852 .
.
What are some "rules" that you have broken recently? "Don't over expose your image", "Photograph things that are pretty", "Don't cut off part of your subject", "Pictures should be in focus". . . Just a few examples of commonly held photography "rules" that you can break.
.
Can't wait to see your "Rule Breaker" images today. And remember guys. Don't forget your 1-2-3's. For every 1 image you tag, comment on 2 in the tag and like 3 others. Thanks for joining in! πŸ€“ - Josh.

"Capturing the light in my new house. My cat and dog love being able to see what's happening on our street 😊." - @db.cooper_.

Lovely work Debbie. πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ». Nice job.

Hey guys. Josh here. We're switching things up a bit today. There are technical troubles with the tag so instead let's do our "Comment to participate" model. Like Jenny did, just leave us a comment letting us know you submitted to today's theme.
.
Today we're looking for "Slideshows". Show us a story or artistic piece, consisting of up to 10 shots, submitted using Instagram's new slideshow feature.
.
Loving your slideshows so far guys. Keep em coming. - Josh.
.
*Note to the editors. No worries if you want to sit this one out today.
.

"I posted a few from my hotel room in Atlanta. My husband is attending a conference and I was going to use the day to write, but taking photos for @jjcommunity seemed like a nice way to procrastinate!" - @jennydunnpray.

I'm going to give you permission to procrastinate any time you want Jenny. πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ». Nice job.

Hi guys. Josh here. Sorry I'm running late with the theme. I love the new ability to add more than one image to an IG post! Today let's use this new slideshow feature in the forum. Put together a group of up to ten images that tell either a literal or a visual story. Tag your slideshow to #jj_forum_1851 .
.
I'm calling this slideshow "Kevin and I in Ireland". Catchy right. Hehehe. πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ». About half the images are Kevin's, including the amazing fisherman portrait. The other half are mine.
.
We shot these on the last day of our trip, on a back roads tour with Brian from @selectireland, @croninscoaches and @specializedtravelservices. Speaking of @selectireland, our hotel company sponsor for the trip, they treated us so well at the @talbotstillorgan. Great staff and one of the most comfortable rooms I've stayed in for a while. Highly recommended. I put some shots up on the last slide.
.
So let's get started with the forum. What is your slideshow about? Mines pretty straight forward, but maybe yours will be more artsy? Who's going to do a photo essay all about their kitchen utensils? That's one I'd scroll through for sure. πŸ˜‰.
.
As we've seen in the editor's grids, there is something special about a deliberately chosen group of images. Let's work on that together today. Our theme in the forum is "Slideshows"and our tag is #jj_forum_1851 .
.

Back in the day, if you wanted to see how a magazine got made, you'd look at the editor's light box. The light box was the place the magazine editors viewed the slides of their favorite shots and decided which pictures made the final cut.
.
Did you know that you can look at the #JJ Community light box? Just search for the day's hashtag and substitute the word "featured" for "forum". I think of that tag as our virtual light box here at #JJ .
.
Yesterday's theme was reflections and the @jj_editor's added over 250 of their favorite shots to the #jj_featured_1850 gallery for Kevin and I to review. These are some of my favorites.
.
Make sure you check the "light box" everyday. And while you're there, thank the editors for me, for all the time and effort they put into helping us make the world a more creative and connected place.

Hey guys. Josh here, home in Atlanta. I'll be back in under an hour with our next new theme. It's gonna be a first. I think you'll like what I've got planned.
.

Hey it's @kevinkuster highlight for our theme today.

Theme: reflections

Good morning guys. Josh here, posting from Heathrow airport today. Kevin and I are flying back from Dublin.
.
There is a reason why puddles and mirrors are practically a staple on Instagram. Reflections are kind of magic. Look long enough into them and you can find a whole other, backwards, dimension. The creative possibilities are literally endless.
.
Let's go that way today. "With Reflection" is our challenge and our tag is #jj_forum_1850 .
.
Big congrats to @jmccullough for inspiring today's theme and thanks to @jj_editor_intothevoid for the assist.
.
#JJ_EXPLAINED- .
.
Are you new to the community? It's not as confusing as it seems at first. :-). Here's the deal.
.
Sometimes it can be hard to get your pictures seen and aren't we all looking for inspiring photographers to follow. That's why I created the forum 5 years ago. It's a place to come together for inspiration and encouragement.
.
Every morning, NYC time, we make a post announcing our new theme and tag. Your job is to tag images that fit the theme. You can use shots you have already posted but we really love to see the theme inspire you to find new shots. The @jj_editors, @kevinkuster and I scour the tag and repost our favorite submissions through out the day. Over half a million people might see your pic! Pretty cool stuff.
.
We are ALL about keeping things simple, but in the spirit of our motto, "Create to connect", we ask that you follow our only "rule". We call it the 1-2-3 rule. For every 1 image you tag, comment on 2 in the tag and like 3 others.
.
Glad you're here. Can't wait to see your shots. Speak up if you have questions or comments. We like to think this is the friendliest place on the internet. :-).
.

Back in a bit with a new theme. Our theme yesterday was "Soft" and our tag #jj_forum_1849 . This lovely image was submitted by @omerika and featured by @jj_editor_georgiak . Love the sexy soft vibe here. πŸ€“πŸ‘πŸ» - Josh.
