Passing along a reminder from @flipsandfollies to practice technique! It’s much easier to correct bad habits from the beginning than it is to correct them years later! Good technique is important for so many things including control, consistency, reducing risk of injury, and confidence in your skills. Technique doesn’t just come from throwing skills over and over, but creating a strong mind to muscle connection and actively engaging your muscles through a skill. Drills can teach us how to do that without actually throwing the skill. The other thing that affects technique is mobility. I’ve always had very tight shoulders and and inflexible back (aside from when I almost had a needle for like 6 months haha). My lack of mobility is what keeps me from keeping my arms in and legs together during handsprings. My goal right now is to increase that mobility to have better technique in my handsprings, which will also enhance all the skills I throw after it!

“But I don’t want to look bulky!” said every female on a low calorie, intense cardio regime. Trust me, I understand just as much as anyone the power of diet culture. It’s a myth that lifting heavy weights will make you bulky and it’s a myth that women have to restrict the food they eat to 1200 calories to have their “goal,” body. Lifting weights (and eating in a caloric surplus), increases muscle mass, which, increases metabolism, which, hand in hand, changes your body composition. Yes, you will look fit. No, you will not look “bulky.” More often than not, what women (and men), refer to as “bulky,” is women who have an extreme and unwavering dedication to building muscle and eventually dieting for a competition. To maintain that look year round is not only unhealthy, but impossible for the vast majority (if it’s not your body type, you can’t change your genetics). These women are dedicated athletes and still most of them look like your average gym goer when they are not prepping for a show. If you think that lifting heavy 3/7 days per week will make your muscles explode, you’re seriously underestimating the work that these “bulky,” women put in. Lol. Anyway, this is me yesterday. #tbt to a month ago when I wasn’t sick... You know what sucks? Having colds in the summer time. I took nighttime medicine at 8pm last night and woke up on the couch at midnight feeling drunk. I stumbled into bed and had the best sleep ever. I woke up feeling so rested this morning, it was great. Tonight’s schedule is work and tumbling and no matter how runny my nose is, I’m pushing through 😅

I’ve done a bit of a bulk this summer. Not really intentionally, just eating good and lifting heavy! No tracking or taking anything too seriously, just doing what I love! But I think it’s time to start an intuitive cut. Nothing too drastic, just easing up on the summer temptations (alcohol and ice cream haha), and switching up my workouts. I’ll probably do a physique update in a month or so but nothing until then because I don’t like putting myself under that pressure. Current weight and body fat percentage? I have no idea and I’m quite happy about that ☺️
