Jen Hatmaker  I write words, I say things, I raise a bunch of kids with the husband, sometimes we are on TV. That about covers it.

I have so much to tell you about my last few days, but the one thing I want to drop on your radar is that Sydney and I are in D.C. with @hthhglobal (Hope Through Healing Hands) meeting with Chiefs of Staff, representatives, House members, and White House staffers advocating for funding for global health for women and children. Today was an amazing day, and I’ll tell you that even now, even on a day when our president sided with Russia over American intelligence in front of the whole world, there are good, good people in the White House who care and are working in a bipartisan fashion to continue to be good news to this world. We were so encouraged today, and it might not surprise you that a key force behind American benevolence in our government are women in both parties.
.
If you are the praying type, we’d take a few tomorrow as we advocate for the world’s poor. May we be articulate, compelling, and courageous. Three cheers for my co-conspirator @kimberlywilliamspaisley and the other outstanding leaders of faith in our crew. ❤️
.
Also, dinner last night at @julie_rodgers and @amandahite’s stupid awesome condo and my sincere apologies to Julie’s darling Dad who got cut out of this picture. I’M SORRY, JULIE’S DAD.

"Jesus permanently made the sanctuary safe, pure, and accessible to all. He didn’t lessen its holiness but rather raised us to heaven’s standards through the cross. It’s just crazy. It was truly a new and living way, and Jesus threw the church doors open to the entire world and bid us come. Obviously, this entire miracle was Jesus’ doing: his life, his death, his resurrection, his dreams for this earth." .

HAVE YOU HEARD???
.
My very own parents are going to be on my podcast very, very soon. Guys, I don't even think my dad knows what a podcast is. He's a retired minister and 100% the source of where I get all of my "mouthiness" from and I'm pretty sure he's prepared a twelve page sermon/stand-up-routine for us already. My mom, the retired school principal and only source of calming stability in my entire family, is used to dealing with shenanigans and will undoubtedly keep us all on task and see to it that we don't leave here without ensuring there are at least some decent takeaways by the end of the episode. The behind-the-scenes calamity that will ensue from this process alone is going to be nothing short of epic. I cannot wait for it.
.
As a fun twist, my team came up with the idea of letting YOU (dear listeners) come up with the interview questions. THEY'RE KEEPING ME TOTALLY IN THE DARK. I have no idea what will go down but I know it's going to be amazing and I want you to be a part of it!
.
If you have a burning parenting-related question to ask Larry & Jana (you can call them Mom and Dad), here's how you can get in on the fun:
.
📱 Use your smartphone's voice memo function or an audio app to record your question. (If you have more than one question you want to submit, please send them as separate recordings.)
.
🙋 Your question 1) MUST begin by giving us your first name and where you're "calling" from (eg. "This question is from Lisa in Minneapolis and my question is....") and 2) MUST be less than 30 seconds long. Questions not meeting this criteria cannot be used so double-check your recording before you send it on to us.
.
📧 When you're finished recording your question(s), email your audio file(s) as an attachment to us at podcast@jenhatmaker.com. My team will be secretly picking out several questions for my Mom & Dad to answer right here on the podcast! (And now, I'm seeing visions of all of the embarrasing stories and photos that are about to be shared. HAVE MERCY ON ME, PEOPLE.) .
⏰ Make sure to get your questions submitted by Friday, July 13 at 12pm CT to make the cut.
.
The clock's ticking so GET YOUR QUESTIONS IN ASAP!

WHO FEELS ME ON THIS? Amazon Prime. Grove Collaborative. Shipt. Instacart. ModCloth. It's a great time to be alive! #AgeOfTheIntrovert

We're nearing triple digit temps here in Austin and I'm about to melt into a puddle right here on the pavement like the Wicked Witch of the West. "Here lies Jen - wife, mother, daughter, and sister; once a humorous speaker and writer of books, now a gelatinous glob of goo." ⠀
.⠀
Summer in Texas is like living on the surface of the sun and we're not even to the worst part of it yet. Fortunately, my guest on the #ForTheLovePodcast this week understands my grievances with nature and she's come to my rescue!
.
I know you've heard me talk about the company @ModCloth about one billion times. The swimsuits I wear every summer to the lake? ModCloth. The cute maxi dress with cactuses that I wore this weekend in Sonoma? ModCloth. Practically half of my closet (aka my dope recording studio)? ModCloth. When I stumble onto something that works for me, I hold onto it for dear life and throw all of my dollars at it. ⠀
.⠀
So, when prepping for this summer fashion episode, knowing we were going to talk about dressing for road trips and dinner parties, summer weddings, hanging out by the pool, and enduring the office blasting ice cold AC, I just knew I had to talk to one of the genuises behind this brand that I love so dearly. That's how I met Lizz, the VP of Fashion at @modcloth and she gave me (us) all the best recommendations for surviving the summer with a little bit of style. ⠀
.⠀
You will 100% want to check out my website to see pics of all of the clothes Lizz talks about in this episode. Clearly, I am not afraid of a fun deserty cactus pattern. What patterns are you drawn to? Can you go for some whimsy in your wardrobe? ⠀

I was just looking for a file on my laptop and I stumbled across a talk I gave in 2005 on "Manhood" to a bunch of college boys, and I want to throw myself off a cliff. I cannot believe how sheltered and narrow and god-awful my ideas were. What a mess. The hottest of messes. I'M SO SORRY, BOYS WHO WERE THERE.
.
Those of you somewhere nearer the beginning of your thing, just know that you cannot possibly start in the same space you'll be later. You can't know everything you're going to learn by walking your path before you take your first step. You don't get the knowledge and experience and growth and change at the beginning; you have to earn all that. We don't even know what we don't know at first. Your thing might be 85% different in five years, but you have to start somewhere.
.
Don't be afraid to start because you don't know everything. You couldn't possibly yet. You haven't met all the extraordinary people you are going to meet yet. You haven't failed enough. You haven't gotten enough wrong and had to make it right. You haven't gotten banged up and had to stay the course; perseverance is only earned the hard way, I'm afraid.
.
This is not the stuff of beginnings but of messy middles, and very occasionally, finish lines.
.
So head on out there imperfectly, knowing just as much as you know because that is all you can know right now. You'll get better. You'll get stronger. You'll get wiser and kinder and smarter. You'll learn things you never knew and meet people that will alter your course and lay down a bunch of stuff you started with and pick up a bunch of stuff you didn't know to carry. You'll look back and shake your head (oh my heavenly stars), but at least you laced up your shoes and started somewhere. THAT is the stuff of beginnings.

Hey, everybody! It's Amanda (Jen's sidekick) popping on to ask you for a big favor. We're getting ready for a VERY special episode of the #ForTheLovePodcast, and we need YOUR help! ⠀
.⠀
Jen's parents (Larry & Jana) are going to be gracing the podcast as our special guests for a new series coming up soon. We want to make the most of our time with them on the show so we want to know....Have you ever had a question about Jen that ONLY her parents could answer? If so, now is the time to ask away! We know you all want to dish about the first boy Jen ever dated or what was the reason she got grounded for the first time (or did she ever??) and we know that you might even have some more earnest questions for her parents about what it takes to be a good parent and grandparent--during the busy pre-k years, adolescent, teen years and beyond---what it's like now interacting with your kids as adults, etc. This is your chance to ask all of your burning questions!⠀
.⠀
Here's how you can join in the fun...⠀
.⠀
Instructions & Guidelines: ⠀
.⠀
📱 Use your smartphone's voice memo function or an audio app to record your question. (If you have more than one question you want to submit, please send them to us as separate recordings.)⠀
.⠀
🙋 Your question 1) MUST begin by giving us your first name and where you're "calling" from (eg. "This question is from Lisa in Minneapolis and my question is....") and 2) MUST be less than 30 seconds long. Questions not meeting this criteria cannot be used so double-check your recording before you send it on to us. ⠀
.⠀
📧 When you're finished recording your question(s), email your audio file(s) as an attachment to us at podcast@jenhatmaker.com. We'll be picking out several for Larry and Jana to answer right here on the podcast! ⠀
.⠀
⏰ Make sure to get your questions submitted by Friday, July 13th at 12pm CT to be considered for this special episode.⠀
.⠀
That's all there is to it! So, put your thinking caps on and start sending us those questions now. And, have fun with it! We look forward to reviewing all of your submissions!

Thank you @rebeccadayl for this good word about Of Mess and Moxie!

This book. 🙌🏻 Ever start a book and just KNOW it’s going to be so life-giving and good for your soul!? If you are a mama and aren’t reading a book and looking for one...go get this and start reading, like yesterday.
.
“You are far more than your worst day, your worst experience, your worst season, dear one. You are more than the sorriest decision you ever made. You are more than the darkest sorrow you’ve endured.
.
Your name is not Ruined. It is not Helpless. It is not Victim. It is not Irresponsible. History is replete with overcomers who stood up after impossible circumstances and walked in freedom. You are not an anemic victim destined to a life of regret. Not only are you capable, you have full permission to move forward in strength and health.” @jenhatmaker

Recipe for a Good Day:
.
1. Go to #LimerickLane and enjoy happy hour with the ever charming winemaker @jakebilbro and his darling wife Alexis. Eat the beautiful charcuterie board they set out and drink their award-winning wine. Die of swooning. Watch the boys become enamored with Jake ONCE AGAIN (remember when I told you about him in March?) and later google search “scorpion belt buckles” because Jake was wearing one.
.
2. Zip over to @aristawinery with Texas transplanted dreamboats turned winemakers Mark and Jennifer McWilliams. I kid you not: eat lobster and drink their not-yet-released Chardonnay under the stars and twinkle lights. WHAT IS LIFE. Take adorbs pic with the McWilliams and then second Fake Instagram Laughing pic. Be the last people to leave the party because you don’t want it to end. Ever. In your life.
.
3. Get fairly hysterical in the car and make the decision to create the exact opposite experience of lobster under the stars at a vineyard and go through the drive-through at Jack in the Box. Miraculously, almost impossibly, spend $58 on food that costs 12 cents a piece. Listen to Lily have this nonsensical exchange with the drive through person: “We’ll take five tacos. Wait. They come in a two-pack, right? Okay, we’ll take seven.” Go absolutely ham on all this food at midnight. And listen up: those Jack in the Box tacos are the epitome of garbage food - mystery meat sandwiched with a SLICE OF AMERICAN CHEESE and fried - and I ate two but could have eaten eight and they are delicious and I don’t care what you say. I’d eat one right now.
.
We did high/low for the day, this magical day, and I said my high was having the most awesome, fun family at the party. The one that laughs too loud and tells epic stories and makes friends with everyone there and goes home with phone numbers and stays till the bitter end. My family is my favorite.
.
Thanks to the Bilbros and the McWilliams for a dreamy night we won’t forget.

"It’s nonsense. Really. Rather than fantasizing about greener grass on some other side, water your own grass first, because there is no marriage, no union that doesn’t have its share of aggravations and struggles. None, I promise. There is no man or woman immune to selfishness, mediocrity, laziness, or failure. Sure, Other Guy can seem quite shiny in that other yard (as could you at first), but a permanent relocation discloses the truth: grass is pretty much grass. Add in bills, parenting, and the lame responsibilities of real adulthood, and that shine wears off lightning fast. That grass is fake, untrampled by the wear and tear of an actual shared life. It is a lovely illusion that looks beautiful from afar but becomes sharp and artificial to the touch if not initially, eventually. The ensuing wreckage will outpace the fantasy."

Still the one.
.
Love your person. Hang on through the hard and confusing and frustrating times. Hang on through the busy and distracted and exhausting times. Hang on through the discouraging and disappointing and disillusioned times.
.
Remember the hilarious and happy and fun times. Remember the connected and intimate and precious times. Remember the life you built together. Remember the babies you created. Remember the shared bank of memories. Those count. They matter. They last.
.
Zero marriages are easy. Zero marriages are conflict free. Zero marriages have spots that don’t rub. Zero partners are fault-free.
.
TO BE SURE: Not all relationships could or should be salvaged. Some are toxic and poisonous and abusive and should be walked away from. But if there is still love, still kindness, still hope, love your person.
