“If you’re going to live, you might as well do painful, brave, and beautiful things.” -The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner
Day 15: Book and Scarf- I had to take this opportunity, yet again, to explain to you all the love I have for the book The Serpent King. It’s my favorite book of all-time, and that’s saying a lot because I’m always awful at picking a favorite for anything. Seriously, go read this book if you haven’t- it’s stunning! If you need even more convincing, my twin @old.enough.for.fairytales broke the news to me yesterday that they are working on making this wonderful book into a movie!! I actually had to hold back tears of excitement because I was at work when I got her message 😂
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (a character who had to overcome hardship)- Pretty much every character in The Serpent King has to overcome hardship. I also had to sneak in The Handmaid’s Tale (a book I am reading with some amazing people), Lord of the Flies, and A Thousand Splendid Suns because I hardly ever feature books that aren’t YA on my feed and all three of these also contain characters that have to deal with A LOT of hardship 😭
QOTD- You are stranded on an island. What one book would you want with you to keep you company until you are rescued?!

Come come!! Repost @festivalofwordsde (@get_repost)
Getting excited for the 2018 Festival of Words? So are we! In the days ahead, we’ll be sharing information about our presenters and what they’ll be talking about at the festival. First up: @jeffzentner .
Jeff Zentner is the author of the William C. Morris Award winning and Carnegie Medal longlisted book The Serpent King (2016) as well as Goodbye Days (2017). He lives in Nashville, Tennessee. He came to writing through music, starting his creative life as a guitarist and eventually becoming a songwriter. He’s released five albums and appeared on recordings with Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Thurston Moore, Debbie Harry, Mark Lanegan, and Lydia Lunch, among others.
He will present the opening Keynote address, on the topic: "The Importance of Stories and Empathy.”
For his breakout session, titled “Writing on the Bus,” Jeff will talk about his journey from music to writing, including how and why he made that switch (all while balancing a day job, and without any formal training). .
The Festival of Words is open to all Delaware middle school and high school students, teachers, and librarians. Registration will go live at the beginning of January, so stay tuned! Go to the link in our profile to visit the website for more details.

I’m so honored to be working with Brittany and Matt!! They REALLY get the book and will do it justice.

Thank you black voters in Alabama. You prevented this travesty.

This is the future. God bless Doug Jones. God bless the good and moral people of Alabama who defeated this monster.

My top nine of 2017!

The Icelandic people have the most delightful tradition ever, called Jólabókaflóð—“Yule Book Flood.” On Christmas Eve, they give each other books and then they stay up all night reading and eating chocolate. Thanks to @penguinrandomhouse for these lovely jammies celebrating Jólabókaflóð! Get yours! Link in bio.

When I was a kid, I thought Ed Chigliak from Northern Exposure was the coolest cat on Earth. So every time I rock some Chigliak steaze, I feel super cool

My winter wonderland

Merry Christmas to me!! I’ve read this book already in an earlier form, and even then it was so amazing and imaginative. But I mean, it’s @iamdavidarnold so of course.
