Feels Like Summer by Childish Gambino -In this song, Glover expounds on the myriad and worrisome issues plaguing modern society using instrumentation that is ironically mellifluent. The lines of the chorus and the second verse, (“you can feel it in the streets, on a day like this, the heat; every day gets hotter than the one before”) references global warming and how crime rates tend to rise drastically during summer time. -Overpopulation is touched on in the opening of the first verse (“seven billion souls that move around the sun, rolling faster not a chance to slow down”) as well the status quo of the establishment’s programming of adults and children alike (“men who made ‘machines’ that want what they decide, they’re just tryna tell the children please slow down). -Environmental issues are peppered throughout the second verse, such as air pollution, colony collapse disorder, the water scarcity issue , the fact that Flint STILL doesn’t have clean water , and the imminent extinction of a number of avian species (“running out of water, it’s about to go down; air that kill the bees that we depend upon, birds were made for singing waking up to no sound”). -The visual aspect of the music video features prominent black figures in entertainment, politics and media participating in common summer activities such as playing with water guns, and also makes reference to current events, particularly the image of an aggrieved Kanye West being consoled by a compassionate Michelle Obama (coincidentally, both Chicago natives.). -Take a listen and definitely watch the video.
