Here’s a quick video demonstrating how I trim out the inside of my feet in real time. I personally like all of the lines in my feet to be very crisp and clean. In order for that to happen, I need to wait until the clay is just the right firmness- soft enough to push into the clay on the foot, but hard enough so you don’t leave a fingerprint. This way, the clay won’t stick to itself when trimming, and the trimmings will create no dust. I find when trimming at this firmness, it is important to use sharp tools to achieve an even foot with crisp lines. It is possible to trim a foot like this with dull tools, but it is much more challenging and time consuming. Keep in mind, sharp tools do not have to be expensive. There are plenty of tools on the market that are sharp enough to trim a nice foot, (I recommend Dolan Tools if you are on a budget) and there are even ways you can make your own. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how you treat and maintain your tools. if you are kind to your tools, they will be kind back to you. Enjoy! 🎶Music- We’re Going Down by @whereisalex🎶

Hi, everyone! I’m sorry I’ve been slow to respond to comments and messages lately. I’m trying to get my final college applications in, and that is sucking up a lot of my time.  Anyways, here is a look at some casserole dishes that I made this past week. I didn’t want anything too difficult to make while I had my mind on applying to schools, so I decided to make some simple functional wares to practice my consistency. These 6 casserole dishes were each made with about 2 pounds (910 grams) of stoneware clay and they were thrown on bats to aid with removal. For those of you who don’t know what a bat is, it is basically a removable wheel head. The two handles on each side were made using some small coils of clay that were flattened, shaped and scored and slipped into place. After the first firing, I glazed these casserole dishes with two @amacobrent glazes- Obsidian and Smokey Merlot. I really like the dark purple/reddish look the glazes gave to these dishes. I feel like it would really bring out the colors of a nice lasagna! 😋

I'm a little bit rusty on the wheel after not have thrown for a few weeks, but I think this video can teach a few things. 😄 I feel that this video serves as a good demonstration of how I collar my bottles. You’ll notice that it is done in alternating stages of collaring the clay with the space between my pointer finger and thumb, and pulling up the walls of the neck. I do this because when the clay is squeezed in, it becomes thicker, and by pulling up, it helps to keep the walls a consistent thickness. This technique is great at adding height to your collared neck, but sometimes, if your clay is too wet, or you pull the neck too thin, it can create a wobble in the lip of the pot. This is a very minor problem that can easily be remedied with a pin tool and a steady hand. All it takes is a gradual cut inwards and once the lip  has been evened out, the uneven clay can be lifted up in a ring. Hope this helps out! One last thing- do you prefer me giving tips and tricks, or just showing what I have made and describing the piece? Enjoy! 🎶Music- flume - lose it (flip) by @whereisalex🎶

Here’s a large bowl that I finished up a little while ago. 😄 I decided to use an few @amacobrent glazes on this bowl and I’m sure glad I did! This particular bowl was glazed was a combination of two glazes called lustrous Jade and Aqua- one from the Potter’s Choice line and one from the Celadon line. I fired this bowl to cone 6 on a slow ramp up. I absolutely love how the two glazes combined, especially around the edges where a little bit of reddish yellow is visible. Sometimes, I forget how beautiful commercial glazes can be especially since I find myself obsessing over crystalline pottery. I am keeping this bowl as a a little reminder that it is not always necessary to use the most complicated process to get a great result. This bowl is sure to serve a reminder of that every time I see it in the kitchen. Enjoy!

Over the past few days, I have received several messages asking to show how I made the platter that I carved in last week’s videos. I suppose I should have clarified a bit more when I said it was made with a slab. 😬🤭 While it is possible to throw a platter like this without a mold or a slab of clay, I chose to use this method because the hands-on time of this process is fairly quick and it gives me a consistent shape if I want to make a series of these bowls. In order to make one of these platters, I start with a 1/4 inch thick slab (around 1.5 cm) of clay and I drape it over a mold that was made by @theceramicshop. Next, I use some water and my fingers to smooth the piece of clay onto the surface of the mold. After that, I use a pin tool to cut the slab into a circular shape and I score a ring on the center of the convex slab. Finally, I add a coil of clay to the scored ring and throw it into the shape of a foot. The only downside to this technique, is that I have to wait overnight to remove the piece from the mold or else it will be too soft and collapse. Otherwise, if you would like to make a consistent shape of pottery and you have some time to wait for it to come off of the mold, I would highly recommend this process! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! Enjoy! 🎶Music- The Light Brigade by @whereisalex🎶

As some of you may know, I recently purchased a 3D printer so I could use it as a way to quickly prototype my more complicated ceramic designs before I start producing them. In this video, I am printing out a handle design that I came up with a while ago. I originally hand built a prototype of this handle, but it came out a little uneven and that bothered me, especially if I was going to make a plaster mold of it. As a solution to that problem, I modeled the handle to the best of my ability in Fusion 360 and mirrored everything so it would be symmetrical. Now I am definitely not very good at using Fusion, (hence the funny lines on the inner curve of the handle) but the final model sure is a whole lot better than my first attempt that was made in clay. Also, because this was exported as a .stl file, I can scale the design up or down very precisely to any size I need. I think this design is coming along nicely , but it is definitely not complete yet and not quite as comfortable feeling as I would like it. I think I am going to round over the edges a bit and make the intersection between the two shapes a little bit rounder so a thumb would rest nicely in it. Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the shape and feel of it? I’d love to hear! 🎶 Music- new ways to long for you by @whereisalex 🎶

This is the last video in my three part series of the process I took to decorate this bowl. 😄 In order to finish off the carving and to remove the clay dust that accumulated during the carving process, I use a damp sponge to pick up all of the powder that is coating the bowl. I only allowed myself two passes with the sponge as passing over the delicate carving more than two times risks bleeding the glaze onto the white clay more than I would like. There are a few spots that got a little bit too much underglaze in them, so I’m thinking I will just go over them again with my scraping tool, or maybe I will go over all of the lines with a different color underglaze. What do you think would look better? Enjoy! 🎶 Music - Day 16 by @iamryanlittle 🎶 .

Here's the next step in making that wide bowl that I started the other day! 😄 This was a fairly long carving process, (about 45 minutes) so I had to split it up into three videos inorder to make any sense of what I was doing. Inorder to carve this bowl, I made a tool out of a bent scalpel blade and I also used a little carving tool that I had in my tool collection. I carved the rings with the little tool, and then moved onto the patterns with the scalpel. All of this carving was done on the drier side of leather hard so I could achieve a clean line without creating clay dust. The downside to this is that it leaves a powdery residue where the shavings were crushed by my hand. Inorder to fix this, I will wait for the bowl to dry and then sponge the excess clay off. I will show a video of this on Thursday. :) This is my first time trying sgraffito and I was kind of winging it, but I think the pattern came out fairly nice. What are your opinions on it? Heres a new project I’ve been working on. 😄 I wanted to find a use for a small slab roller that I acquired some time ago, and I thought making some slab built wide bowls would be a great use for it! I was originally just going to glaze these bowls crystalline, but I decided against it in order to do a little bit of experimenting with sgraffito (clay carving). In order for that to happen, I need to coat the bowl in some contrasting material (in this case, black underglaze) so that when I carve through it, the white clay will show through and make a clearly visible line. I like to coat large, flat surfaces with glaze on the pottery wheel because it gives me even glaze coverage and it is a fairly quick process. You’ll notice that I start out with a coarse bristled brush to do my first pass on the glaze and spread it out, and then I use a fine haired brush to pass over the glaze once more to smooth it out. I do this because the fine haired brush likes to suck up liquid, and if I were to use it on the first pass, it would make for a splotchy finish unless it was completely saturated with the glaze which would be a big waste. Look out for a video on Tuesday where I carve into the clay! Enjoy! 🎶Music- Day 1 by @iamryanlittle🎶

Thank you all so much for sticking with me while I took a little bit of time away from pottery to spend some time with my family. 😄 Since it's been a while since I've thrown anything, I thought it would be nice to ease back in to pottery with a few mugs. Mugs are by no means my favorite thing to make, but they are super fun to experiment with and it's not a big deal if you mess one up. I personally like making different variations of rounded mugs, just because I think they feel nice to hold and they keep liquids hot for a long time. These are the only mugs um planning on throwing for right now, but after I finish off a batch of decorative crystalline pieces, I'm going to shift gears and make lots of mugs for a little chance of pace. 😃 Enjoy!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and happy holidays over the past few weeks! I'm getting ready to take a week or so away from pottery, but for my last post for a little while, I decided i'd do a little video of me playing with a texture mat that was sent to me by the same company that makes the AirPen. (Sugarveil) Basically, I just made a slab out of clay on my slab roller, and then I placed the silicone mat on the slab and ran it through the roller again. The end result was a super cool, ridged slab of clay that can be used for handbuilding or other slab based projects. What would you do with a slab like this? I was thinking this would make a very pretty handbuilt vase! What do you think? Enjoy! 🎶Music - Day 21 by @iamryanlittle🎶

Thank you all so much for an amazing year on instagram! I truly appreciate all of the support and encouragement I receive, even if I take a while to respond to messages or disappear for a few days. 😬 I'm trying my best to be present on here as often as possible, but school takes priority, especially since I'm in the middle of applying to college. 😀 Anyways, I am so thankful that a social media like instagram exists so artists like me have a way to share their work. It has been amazing to be recognized on this platform and be able to turn my hobby into my job through the support and kindness of my Etsy customers and followers. So again, thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ and here's to an even better 2018! 🎉

Soooooo... you may notice that today's video is a little bit green. 😂 Reason being, is because the winter sunlight coming through the basement studio window is quite white and it washes all of the colors out. Because of this, it was hard to see what I was doing even with color correction, so I just decided to add a ridiculous filter. 😬😆 I will eventually figure out how to get my videos properly lit in my dark studio, but until then, my videos will be green 😂Anyways, In this video, I am working on a commissioned wall piece made out of 36 ceramic discs that have various dot patterns on them. Inorder to do this, I first cut a circle out of a slab, let it dry to leather hard, drew my design with a sharpie, and then used my piping pen called an Airpen to pipe little slip dots onto the disc. After the disc is dried, I fire it and the sharpie burns off. Then comes glazing, but that will come in another video :) I'm super excited to get this wall piece finished and show the final results! I'm aiming to get it finished by late January. Enjoy! Music -🎶Day 19 by @iamryanlittle🎶

Here's a little green celadon crystalline mug. 😄 This one was definitely hard to let go of when it sold on Friday. I'm so glad that went to a loving home though :) My next Etsy update will consist of mainly decorative pieces and mugs as I'm sure you are all tired of seeing so many urchin bowls and I'm itching to get back to crystalline glazing! I find mugs to be super difficult to get right, but very satisfying to make and hold when they do come out correctly. Personally, I like collecting mugs from other artists more than any other ceramic form. What about you? Do you think I should make more mugs for my next sale?

Here's a computer generated image of my new mug design that I just finished today. 😄 I don't typically design my pieces on the computer, but I thought since this mug is so uniquely shaped, it would be a good experience and a fun way to experiment with the final look of the piece. This was designed in Fusion 360 incase you are wondering. What do you think? Also, there are still a few things left in my Etsy shop that can arrive before Christmas! The link is in my bio if you are interested :) Enjoy!

As per popular request, here's a green urchin bowl that I made for my Etsy update this Friday! (The 15'th). This is the first test that I have done with this glaze, and I'm liking the way it looks so far! This glaze is from an old recapie that I found in my book collection and I found it interesting that this glaze is green where thick and brown where thin (on the bottom of the foot). It's like two glazes in one! What do you think? Should I make more bowls of this color and add them as an option to my urchin bowl line? As for a name, I'm thinking of naming this glaze something to do with moss. Any suggestions using the word moss in the name? Enjoy!

Here's a look at the finished rolled-lip cup from a few posts back! I'm loving the way the green glaze compliments the shape and I think that this is definitely a form I want to explore more in the future. Also, I received a few comments on the original post about this cup asking about the functionality of the rolled lip and if it would cause liquid to dribble out while drinking. I am happy to report that the lip does not create any dribbling (at least with my drinking technique.) Along with the rolled lip helping to strengthen the cup, the base of this cup is super wide so it is incredibly difficult to tip over. I'm pretty satisfied with my first attempt at this cup and this will be up for sale for my holiday Etsy sale on the 15'th. Enjoy!

Here's a quick peek into how I glaze most of my pots. 😄 I had this pint of green celadon @amacobrent glaze lying around so I thought I'd use some of it up. I typically brush my glazes because I don't have enough of them to dip, especially crystalline, which I make in small batches, and it is much safer/more convenient than spraying for me. This particular piece was actually glaze fired yesterday and you can see a sneak peek of it in my live video that I had tonight. :) Tomorrow is a big day of photography and then the images will be uploaded to Etsy. I will have a definite date for my holiday sale in the coming days. Enjoy!

Thank you all so much for the name suggestions on my last post! Here's a peek at the first layer of my kiln after being filled with urchin bowls for my holiday sale. 😄 Along with these bowls, I'm making a few mugs, a few little cups and hopefully, if all goes to plan, two decorative bottles. I'm feeling a little bit behind scedule currently, but I'm going to push super hard tomorrow and hopefully getting everything glazed and fired off. I'm aiming for an Etsy sale date sometime around the 15'th of December. I will keep you updated when I have a better idea of the sale date/time. Thanks everyone for your patience! Enjoy!

My super good school friends Lucy and Gaby over at @monkeepottery have been hard at work for the past few days making these beautiful colored soy candles! For these, they shaved some colored wax into a hardened candle that was poured earlier and then they used a torch for a few seconds to liquify the colored wax and create a beautiful pattern. These look super amazing in person. It's amazing to see how far Lucy and Gaby have come in just a few years, from being beginner potters and learning to center, to making incredible functional ware with even wall thickness and stunning glazes. Both Lucy and Gaby have been working all year in preparation for this weekend, where they will be at a craft sale selling their pots! The craft show is located at Newton South High School this Sunday. It's been amazing to watch @monkeepottery develop over the course of this year and I am incredibly honored to call them my friends. Good luck this weekend, Lucy and Gaby! If you would like to see some more of their work, check out their page @monkeepottery! Enjoy!

Here's a quick demonstration showing what you can do if you happen to make a mistake on a piece. 😄 This accident happened to me when making a second piece like the one from 2 days ago. On this one, I was using much wetter clay, and by the time I got to shaping the neck, the clay had gotten too soft and twisted up on me. As a quick fix, I decided to chop off the neck, and turn it into a functional piece with a rolled lip! As said by the painter Bob Ross, "There's no mistakes. Only happy accidents." Enjoy!
