Pottery is often perceived as a fairly quick process due to the time-lapse videos that many potters, including me post on their instagrams. In reality, making a pot from start to finish can take upwords of 20 minutes for a small and simple piece or 45 minutes for a large one. Pictured in this video is the very first and fastest pull that is used to make almost any form on the wheel. This pull's goal is to move as much clay from the bottom of the piece to the top in as little time possible. This is in an effort to keep the wear on the clay to a minimum so it keeps its structural integrity. You may have noticed if you've ever made something on the wheel, the more you play with the clay, the more "tired" it becomes. This is caused by the molecular bonds in the clay weakening and in turn, this reduces the clay's plasticity. So next time you throw, try to do each move as efficiently as possible and you will be surprised how much time and effort you save from struggling with "tired" clay. Enjoy! 😄

[SOLD] ✨FLASH SALE!✨ I've been getting many requests lately to make another batch of crystalline mugs. I hear everyone's requests and I've started another batch, but keep in mind pottery is a long process. While I am still working on the most recent batch, I do have one last mug that I saved from the last round. This is my personal favorite mug from the last firing so I thought it would be an appropriate mug to do a flash sale with. 😀 This mug is foods safe and holds roughly 11 fluid ounces. Here are the rules to purchase: The first person to comment "SOLD" in the comment section below, gets this mug for $65 plus shipping and handling. I will ship anywhere in the world but keep in mind international shipping outside of the US is more expensive. Payment can be made through PayPal or Etsy. I really appreciate everyone's support through my instagram even if you can't afford one of my pieces. Your support is what keeps me going each day and it helps keep my love for pottery alive. 😊💕

I recently received a question asking what my favorite pottery tool is. Honestly, in my opinion, I feel that the most versatile and useful tool for my purposes is the metal rib. While sharp and slippery, the metal rib has characteristics that many other tools simply cannot offer. Take shaping a pot for example. While using a metal rib to shape a piece of pottery, it is simultaneously removing excess slip from the surface of the clay preventing it from becoming too wet and collapsing. This allows me to throw thinner and taller without being concerned about the structural integrity of my walls. Also, a metal rib makes a great tool for shaving small slivers of clay off of a pot when trimming. This is one of the ways I get the surfaces of my pots so smooth. A smooth pot tends to play very nicely with crystalline glaze so I spend several minutes using my metal rib to create a silky surface. Don't get me wrong, there are other tools that are very important in the process of making pots, but none seem to be used by me as frequently as my trusty metal rib. What's your favorite pottery tool? Enjoy! 🎶 Music -Damage by @iamryanlittle🎶

I was just looking through my phone and I came across this video of me throwing sometime last year. 😄Often, it can be great to look back on your previous work to see how you have improved and how much you still have to learn. Just looking at forms, my sense of shape has greatly improved, from the proportions in the neck to the elegance of the body. My walls have become much thinner and lighter, and my use of clay is much more efficient. Moving forward, I would like to learn how to throw larger pots with less effort and with a smaller amount of clay. I'm always doing my best to learn new techniques and processes in an effort to provide a higher quality pot to my customers. I sincerely hope that everyone is enjoying watching me learn and grow as a potter and I'm hoping to improve much more in the years to come. Enjoy! 😄

Here is my new crazy blue glaze that almost glows in the sun. 😃While sitting indoors, the crystals in this glaze almost disappear but when viewed outdoors, the crystals really pop. I'm looking forward to working much more with this glaze and maybe even making the background darker. What do you think of the glaze?

This is the harsh reality of ceramics. You can literally be on the final step of making a pot, and within one second, the last 25 minutes of your work is ruined. 😓 While this may upset some people, it is important to remember that this is all part of the process and it happens to everyone. The beautiful thing about failure is that clay can be smashed up, rewedged and thrown again. It's just the life cycle of this wonderful medium. ♻️Music- 🎶Calderon by @iamryanlittle 🎶

Lately, I've been feeling inspired to work on some functional pieces rather than decorative. Cups are a great way to practice and maintain your skills while making something that can be used in everyday life. There are limitless cup forms, but sometimes I feel the simplest are the most practical. Perfectly shaped for effortless handling, and a wide top for easy accessibility to the liquid inside. You will notice that I used a footing rib on the piece at one point to test out a different shape, but I decided on cutting off the foot and leaving a simple edge. I just had a gut feeling that the cup would be better off without a pronounced foot. The small ridge that was left from this process will be trimmed smooth at a later time. I'm hoping to get lots of these made for an Etsy update in a few weeks. Enjoy! 😄 🎶Music - Lucy's Song by @iamryanlittle 🎶

Congratulations, @llamasluvthis! I truly appreciate all of the support that I have been getting on my page for the past few months. I really wish I could make a pot for each and every one of you, but sadly, I just don't produce enough and the materials are too expensive to make that a reality. 😢 In an effort to make this giveaway as fair as possible, the winner was picked by numbering every comment and using a random number generator to pick a random number. Thank you to everyone who participated in my giveaway!

I've been experimenting a lot lately to find the perfect black glaze to use on the bottom of my pots. I was originally using a black underglaze, but that was unpredictable and would occasionally bubble at high temperatures. After many glaze tests, I have finally settled on a cone 10 matte black spectrum glaze. This glaze provides the matte look of a raw underglaze with the predictability of a dependable Amaco glaze. I'm super happy with the way it came out and I'm hoping it will improve my pots in the long run. :)

Here is the piece from the other day after it has been glazed. 😄I'm super happy with the final result of this piece and I love the crystal growth on this one. I haven't ground the bottom down on the piece yet so that is why it is jagged incase you were wondering. I've been a little slow on the instagram posts lately because I cut my thumb really bad and I didn't want to risk getting an infection from throwing with an open cut. 😬I'm hoping to be able to be back on the wheel in a couple of days. 👍I was thinking of auctioning this vase off on instagram if people would be interested. What does everyone think? Enjoy!
