RIP Walter Becker.
When I was 12, my father introduced me to some phenomenal music-- of the many, his absolute favorite was Steely Dan. I can remember driving across Indiana in the front seat with all of the windows down while he belted out the lyrics in his southern accent, interrupting when needed to explain the song. The music of Steely Dan is not only some of best arranged and composed studio albums I've ever heard, it's a solid expression of the times in both NY and LA in the late 70's.
Cool as fuck music, plain and simple.
But what I'll always love most of all were the occasional lyrics twisted in birthday cards from my dad to fit his punchline ('Rikki Don't Lose that Number' or 'Hey 19'), the young love for a woman in "Peg", to the fun experiences of lawlessness we shared together while "Do It Again" blared. And finally, the song "Deacon Blues" provided me with an understanding and empathy into his challenges in life •
Steely Dan was truly one of the soundtracks to his life. So thank you Walter for the gifts and thank you dad for the memories... today marks the 6th year of his passing.
