"Chaosan Chao, the Jessie Jackson of the Mien people (father of former San Pablo Mayor Kathy Chao Rothberg), passed at 1:05 pm yesterday, Wednesday, April 5th at Stanford Hospital, from various complications after undergoing a bone marrow transplant. Chaosan lost his battle with his health but he should be remembered for his activism, his love for his countrymen and his work in the community.
Chaosan was the founder of Lao Family Community Development, INC. (LFCD). He and his family were among the first Iu Mien refugees to immigrate to the U.S., settling in San Pablo, California in 1978. Shortly after arrival, in a matter of only a few years, Chaosan saw the desperate need to help his fellow Iu Mien refugees navigate life in the U.S. He offered his three bedroom family apartment as a first shelter to many Iu Mien families. This led to the founding of LFCD which serves many refugees and immigrants today, expanding to provide assistance to the larger non-immigrant community as well. In the most recent weeks; in it's 38th year, LFCD sponsored 12 Syrian refugee families to Sacramento.
The Iu Mien community has lost a great leader. Chaosan’s energy, his enthusiasm and his presence will be missed by many. Funeral service will take place on either the 15th or the 22nd of April, in El Cerrito. I will keep everyone posted when I have more details." ~By Koy Wong Jay
