Rick Taylor  My vinyl collection & real life stories & true tall tales from a life filled with music. All #springsteen all the time. Beatles, Stones, Foo's, etc.

Bruce Springsteen Born in the U.S.A. 1984. One of the biggest selling albums of all time. Also when those of us early supporters had to learn to share. 😎. 7 of the 12 songs went top 10. Over 15 million sold at the time - was #1 for months and in the top 10 for over a year. Has now sold over 35 million. #85 on RS Top 500.
Let me stop and say listen to the Arthur Baker mixes of the song Born in the USA (that's what I'm holding), he leaves out the 80's flourishes that everyone was using at the time. The radio mix and especially the freedom mix show it off as the protest song it is. Also watch Neil Young do his Sex Pistols version of the song at musicares for Springsteen. Trust me it's worth it.
Also during this tour I saw him at Giants Stadium and vowed never again to be that far away and I didn't ever again including that same year. I had always been close the like 20 times before and dozens of times since. Even if you don't like Bruce the best way to understand our addiction is to see him live. You'll get your chance soon. He can't take being off the road for long. He doesn't have a pat show. It changes night to night. He'll never play less than 3 hours. Go while you have the chance.
The songs off this album played live and it's just my opinion sound even better without the 80's sound.
This shot also taken at Rock & Brews. KISS owned and operated. 😎

A 1st for me. One of my early posts and a big time classic album. Thanks #vinylcollection #vinylcollectionpost

The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 1967. Even if it's not your favorite Beatle's album (me included), it's still the most important album of all time. It ushered in the album era, it was the 1st album to use 8 track recording allowing more experimentation, it's considered the 1st one to combine art and and music, the list goes on. It was a communal opening of a record. Everyone rushed out and bought it (no I was way to young, but my mom did), everyone had to have it. It was the Summer of Love and it was psychedelic. No singles were released though it's so good that Penny Lane and Strawberry Field's- the 1st songs they recorded for it were given to EMI to get them to shut up and they were put out as singles. They had quit touring and could focus on recording. They were still working together and combining their skills. John later said he didn't like his song Good Morning but what a killer guitar solo. Within You Without You is I think one of George's greatest songs. A Day In The Life - John played this for Jagger and he said well that's a helluva thing, 2 songs in 1. I was at one of the 1st shows McCartney did the song live and it's amazing and I went in thinking no way could it be pulled off. All the songs are fantastic and worked together.
The photo was taken at Rock & Brews - Kiss (well Stanley & Simmons) owned. Massive beer selection. I'm even caught a buzz just off a Ballast dark and a tall Shocktop. What a lightweight.

Talking Heads Speaking In Tongues 1983. Sometimes when one of your favorite bands gets really popular it doesn't mean they've sold out. Sometimes it means they're firing on all cylinders, as Talking Heads were during this period. The other band members had time between albums to put out Tom Tom Club - a really great album. Some of the fun of that album spilled over into this album. Some pretentions were gone and fun, funk and dance rhythms were in making it an ideal party album. Swamp is a fantastic take on John Lee Hooker. Burning Down The House, Slippery People, Naive Melody and Girlfriend is Better is Byrne at his songwriting best. Do I like all the earlier albums - on yeah, some of my all-time favorites. But the concerts during this period were the best. Ranked 54 in RS Top 500. I'd put it higher.
Off subject. Weird things happen in NYC. A few days before Christmas I'm in Tower Records upper West Side which was a humongous store. There was a corner with 45's and David "freakin" Bryne starts asking me to help him find some. Gives me a list and I said yeah I'll round these up for you. I give him my list of albums and he goes and gets them. Really nice guy.

The Eagles Hotel California 1976. Their best album thanks to Joe Walsh - a national treasure. I go through periods of listening to The Eagles. It's been awhile. They became the biggest of the Laurel Canyon musicians, but in the early days of sneaking off to shows when I was 14 I saw them open for Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and the later for the Stone's in '75. But it turned fast with One Of These Nights, then all those acts (except Stones of course) opened for them. Even during the country rock period Frey always had a rock side to him. His songs, not Henley's are some of my favorites. When Joe joined and they recorded this album Felder and Frey came alive and got back to rockin'. Some of the best guitar duels I've ever seen were this tour with Joe and Felder. Henley didn't change. Lol. He sings good though. I always liked Timothy Schmidt from Poco days too. This album continues to sell. 26x platinum. Shoot their greatest hits has sold 38x platinum. This album is ranked 37 in RS Top 500 and that's about right. They made their mark for sure.

Chuck Berry The Great Twenty-Eight 1982. Released on Chess Records. I mention that because I have a lot of the Chess compilations and they were extremely important to Rock 'n' Roll getting off the ground. I have Chuck songs from before he came out as a rocker with Maybellene. He was a blues guy. This album is #21 on RS Top 500. The only compilation higher is Elvis's Sun Sessions. Between the songs on the 2 albums are the formation of what we still listen to today. Talk about songs were riffs were borrowed from and you'll hear them on this double album. This covers the years from '55 to '64, but mostly till '59. You Can Never Tell is the only big one missing - from '64 you probably have it on Pulp Fiction anyway. These songs created the bulk of what came from the British Invasion - ask Keith. Lol. He still borrows from these songs. The Chess blues and Chuck were what a young Clapton listened too. This cranky guy got teen's up and rocking and revolting against everything that came before. It's always good to look back to see where we've been and where we're going.
This album has been reissued as a deluxe set with a live album.

Neil Young Harvest 1972. Another artist who's music I've lived for decades and is real difficult to pick a favorite of. This album, After the Gold Rush, Rust Never Sleeps or if I cheat Decade or so many others. This album though gave Neil the keys to the world and the freedom to do anything he wanted - luckily for us. I love it when he stomps around on stage with Crazy Horse doing hard rock, his version of pink or just fun rock. But I've also seen him acoustic which is amazing. This album is amazing beyond Heart Of Gold and Old Man. Alabama took over for Southern Man. Out on the Weekend and Are You Ready For the Weekend are great romps. Needle and the Damage Done steers toward Tonight's the Night.
An amazing artist with an incredible discography.
PS. You all should watch his Sex Pistols version of Born in the USA he did at Musicares for his buddy Bruce. Neil at his stomping best.

AC/DC Highway to Hell 1979. I play this album a lot. I keep thinking I want to do my favorite top 25 albums, but then I can't decide this one or Back in Black? Highway to Hell pushed them to international standard bearers for what Hard Rock should be for decades to come. Plus I never saw them with Bon Scott and live I loved hearing the earlier songs with Johnson singing. Mutt Lange came in to produce this one to clean up the rough edges but luckily kept all the power this band has in. As much as I like the title track also Girls Got Rhythm, If you Want Blood and for me Night Prowler stand out.
I also listen to Highway to Hell done at an Australian show by Springsteen and Eddie Vedder a lot. Crazy wild guitar by Lofgren, Van Zandt and Bruce.

They never wait for me. One of the greatest albums of all time. Side 2 is one of my favorite sides ever. Only the Beatles can do an 8 song medley that'd be 8 hit songs for someone else. The guitar solo on The End is actually Paul 1st, then George and John finishes. Plus the side starts with one of George's best songs - Here Comes The Sun. Side 1 is no slouch starting with Come Together and Something which are the singles. Ranked #14 on RS Top 500.
I don't blame Yoko for the break up. I blame Allen Klein - he ruins everything he touches.
I just found out there's such a thing as to many hashtags. Lol. So I had to go back in and edit.

Bruce Springsteen & The (freakin') E Street Band Live/1975-85. I am going back to the well @for.the.record.marty lol. For @jennn_erator #mayvinylchallenge I'm using a revamped pic from when I had no clue what I was doing on here. Now I have a 27.6% clue. But when it comes to LIVE it's always the hardest working man in the biz. I've said it before but probably 80% of what I listen to in my car is Bruce Live - downloads of shows I've been to since 74 from his site, bootlegs of shows before he put them out and this 5 LP album. I make up my own shows out of those and I've created what would be my perfect show so many times, but then he'll do a new cover or a track that hadn't been done before and I start over. Like I'm obsessed with him and Eddie Vedder doing Highway To Hell in Australia. On this album I was actually at concerts for 3 of the songs. I was at 20 something shows during this period. He always played over 7 hours and changed my life each time. Lol
Can't wait for Western Stars and the 2020 and the E Street Band. When I grow up I want to be in the band. I can play tambourine.

Billy Joel Piano Man 1973. I'll say Happy 70th Birthday to Billy. Hard to believe. I always wanna call this his debut but it was his 2nd album. But for me the first time I heard him was Piano Man on the radio and the DJ played Captain Jack right after. I'd been playing piano since I was 6 and here it was early high school (I still wasn't that good - my teacher said my social life got in the way. Lol), so I rushed out and bought it. Still one of my favorites of his. I've really come to appreciate some other songs on here like Ballad of Billy the Kid, which he played 1st time I saw him.
Odd fact - he builds Springsteen's motorcycle's for him. Bruce rooke down in Jersey recently and called him to come fix it. Lol. Bruce hitched a ride to the bar with 2 guys and waited for him.

Paul McCartney & Wings Red Rose Speedway 1973. I couldn't resist since this rose bush is going wild. One of my oldest albums - even the booklet is still attached and the braille on the back is a shout out to Stevie Wonder saying we love you man. Crazy to me that it went #1 and had a #1 hit - My Love. Even Paul has said he didn't like this one. But I've heard some stuff off the remaster and it has some good interesting stuff on it, especially the live songs. The same year his best album came out - Band On The Run. Saw them after that came out and they only played My Live from this one. BUT let me tell you I saw him live a few years back and it's a totally amazing 3 hour concert that everyone should see. I'm hoping to see him again.
