Great meeting today at @hammer_museum as I build out the 2018 stride for my next installation and exhibition titled, smallasaGIANT. A collaboration with @calendow @eastside_neighborhoodarts and several orgs and community groups--the completed project will feature large scale photographs of incarcerated people that were charged as adults when they were children and sentenced to long term or life sentences when they were still children.
After premiering, the exhibit will travel to 4 - 5 venues throughout the state – identified by input from partner organizations who are moving state-based reform campaigns – to raise public awareness and promote taking action around specific policy asks. Exhibitions will be accompanied by a community forums and actual working meetings focusing on specific reforms that are part of the state-specific movement to end 1) sentencing young people as adults and to long-term sentences, and 2) the practice of youth incarceration.
I invented this project to be in coalition and solidarity with identified partner organizations and to uplift and be in service to already existing movements to create change in the juvenile justice system, particularly as it relates to long-term juvenile incarceration. The core purpose of the work is to create a tangible tool and glaring statement to influence and empower voters, communities, politicians, and stakeholders to change attitudes and policies that fuel one of America’s most tragic and grotesque appendages: Locking children in prison for their entire lives. #smallasaGIANT #endyouthincarceration #talkitwalkit #iselyfe #publicart #artforthepeople #love #servethepeople #givemorethanyoutake #jimhodges
