Being in school, newly introduced to the cycle of puberty and being a teenager, I often saw my girlfriends staying away from the physical activities, resting through their phases; while being on a period. Getting influenced in our teenage years is very common, I too adapted to the notion of giving my body immense rest while being on my periods. Adapting this norm, I grew up being ignorant of the world for a week, every month. Then came a day when I had to travel to the hills for an assignment and I got my period. Feeling the blues, I was on a panic mode when my mom sat me down, telling me that being on period is not a sign of weakness. Being on a period is a sign of strength, that a woman has the power to give birth, give life to this world. Breaking the ever famous taboo - a woman should become bed-ridden and accept that she’s weak from within during periods! My mom taught me that I should get out of my cocoon and take over the world like a tigress. Who runs the world? Girls!
Be the change you want to see. Post your story of how you broke the stigma of period in our society with the hashtag #WhispersBreakSilence. For every story being shared with the hashtag #WhispersBreakSilence, @whisperindia will donate a pack of sanitary pads to a young girl and break the silence on periods for her.
