EVENT: Canada: Modern Architectures in History

On Thursday June 29th from 5 to 7pm, we welcome Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe & Michelangelo Sabatino to launch their new book Canada: Modern Architectures in History published by Reaktion Books. If you would like to join us for this event, please RSVP by filling out the form linked from our website and FB.
A distinct Canadian design attitude coalesced during the twentieth century, one informed by a liberal, hybrid, and pragmatic mindset intent less upon the dogma of architectural language and more on thinking about the formation of inclusive spaces and places. Taking a fresh perspective on design production, Dr. Windsor-Liscombe and Dr. Sabatino map the unfolding of architectural modernity across the country, from the completion of the transcontinental railway in the late 1880s through to the present.

EVENT: Patkau Architects: Material Operations

On Thursday June 22nd from 5 to 7pm, we welcome John and Patricia Patkau and their team to our showroom to discuss their new publication Patkau Architects: Material Operations. If you would like to join us for this event, please RSVP by filling out the form linked from our website and FB page.
Vancouver-based @patkauarchitects is known for creating innovative, sculptural buildings that convey artistic expression through the purposeful use of materials. Patkau Architects: Material Operations reveals the architectural philosophy and techniques that drive the firm's extraordinary constructions. These smaller-scale, research-driven projects complement their major building commissions, including the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver, the Audain Art Museum in Whistler, and the Capilano Library in Edmonton.

Working directly with materials-bending them, breaking them, feeling their texture, mass, and strength-provides a depth of understanding that visual observation alone cannot. The firm's creations demonstrate how attending to and playing with specific materials yields a refreshed and expanded perspective on the possible.

Patkau Architects: Material Operations investigates how the qualities of commonly available construction materials and unconventional techniques produce buildable, expressive forms with inherent structural capacities and evocative identities.

EVENT: We are honoured to be hosting master craftsman Taka from the legendary Japanese manufacturer #Kaikado. He will be demonstrating his work in our front window, June 15th to 17th from 11am to 3pm. Visit us while Taka is here and receive a free personalized engraved scoop with the purchase of a Tea Caddy.

On Thursday the 15th from 5 to 7pm, there will be a formal presentation. RSVP is required, please fill out the form linked from our website, fb and twitter pages.
Kaikado was established in 1875, shortly after Japan opened its doors to the rest of the world. With welcoming outside civilizations came the import of tinplate from England. Tin was used for the plating of steel, and was considered a fashionable foreign-made item at that time.
In the Edo era, canisters made from tin became commonplace means of storage for tea, as were jars made from china or earthenware. It was the company's founder, Kiyosuke, who first designed the tin tea caddy and made it into a commercially available item, the very same caddies that they still make today.
