Most of us only know that India was a British colony. But did you know that various other European nations too made parts of India their respective bases until they turned a so called wealthy nation into a third world country? Kannur was one such place.
St.Angelo's Fort was built in 1505 by Dom Fransisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India on the Arabian sea coast in Kannur town. The portuguese held their sway here until the Dutch captured the fort in 1663 by taking advantage of internal rift between the Portuguese. The fort was later sold by the Dutch to the local Muslim dynasty known as the Arakkals. During colonization, the fort came under the British in 1790 and remained so until India's three centuries of bloody battle of independence was finally won in 1947.

There is a never ending relationship between Kerala and its complicated rituals. These rituals are not just about the main performer, a lot of hard work goes even behind the curtains.
Also, another observation- that we slowly seem to be forgetting our rich cultures and its becoming more of a 'culture-neutral' society at least in the big cities of India, but the youngsters in Kerala enthusiastically participate in such rituals even if it involves standing in Sun for hours and hours and walk backwards 9 times around the temple complex like this ritual of Aryapukanni Theyyam. This is something I absolutely adored while I was in Kerala!!

(There is also a funny story behind this picture 🙈. One young foreigner woman next to me was constantly clicking something in the opposite direction than that of the usual centre of attraction- the colouful Theyyam performer. I was wondering what was it, and I picked up my camera with zoom lens to see in that direction out of curiosity. She saw me doing that and gave a smile and winked at me! Only then I realised she was ogling at these two handsome young men in the picture. 😂😂😂I had to HAD TO click this for a funny memory!!)

Make-up and painting artists transforming a man into a God. Clicked this one at Muttanoor in Kannur district, Kerala during performance of Vishnumoorthi Theyyam that enacts the story of Vishnu's Narasimha avatar killing the demon king- Hiranyakashipu.
All the colours used in these face paintings are natural, such as Kohl, Neelam, Vermilion etc.

Missing Kannur like crazy! Especially in the evenings when I would just be sitting in the balcony of my sea facing room at Mascot Beach Resort, watching the sun set in the Arabian sea. It was so peaceful yet so magical! Just couldn't get anymore perfect❤️.

Another one from my Theyyam diaries- Vayanattu Kulavan Theyyam.

Vayanattu Kulavan was a warrior of Lord Shiva. Once in the forest, Vayanattu Kulavan could not control his greed and started consuming "madhu"- nectar of Lord Shiva, which the Lord had strictly asked Vayanattu to keep away from. Lord Shiva became very angry and He blinded Vayanattu Kulavan's both eyes. Later, after a lot of repenting and requesting, Lord Shiva gave him two silver eyes (notice them in the picture), but to be seen only through the tiny holes in them. In this performance, the Theyyam performer holds a lighted bunch of cocunut fronds and performs a slow dance, bending over and waving the light in front of his eyes as if trying to see. This ritual is performed in the wee hours of the morning just during the transition of darkness to light around 4 am and is an amazing experience to watch.

Did you know, Vidyashankara temple in Sringeri, Karnataka is example of the astronomical expertise of medieval south Indian temple builders.
The main temple hall features 12 pillars designated for the 12 signs of the zodiac in such a manner that the rays of the sun fall on each of them in the order of the twelve solar months.
On the floor is a large circle, marked with converging lines to indicate the direction of the shadows.
Windows and doors along the temple walls are arranged such that equinox sun rays reach the deity while the northern and southern gates enable the sunrise view from the hall during solstices. (Longest and shortest days of the year respectively).

Kandakarnan Theyyam (A ritual dance of North Kerala)

As per Hindu mythology, Kanda Karnan was the son of Lord Shiva. He took birth in Lord Shiva’s Throat (Kanda) and ejected through his Ear (Karna) hence the name Kanda Karnan.

He was born to cure the small pox of Goddess Kali. After he achieved his aim- he presented his father with more demands. Shiva gave him fire, but he wasn’t satisfied. He asked his father for more wishes like sixteen torches, a fire-place in head etc.
This exact story is replicated in Kanda karnan theyyam, where the performer dressed as the God plays with fire, jumps around, drops fire everywhere on the ground and dances with 16 torches tied to his waist.

This 41.5 feet tall Gomateshwara monolith statue is most important landmark of Karkala in Karnataka. It was installed by King Vira Pandya on 13th February 1432.
The piece of rock out of which the statue was carved, was driven uphill on a wagon with 20 wheels with the help of several elephants and countless workers and heaving of pulleys and ropes. The statue was carved from the rock under the shade of a pandal within a year. Happy with the outcome, the king honored the sculptors with gold.

Anathapura Temple in Kasaragod, Kerala is state's only lake temple and is supposed to be the Moolasthanam i.e. the original seat of the more famous Ananthapadmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
Interestingly, this lake, since ancient times has had a crocodile named 'Babiya' which is purely vegetarian and feeds on the rice offerings made in the temple by the devotees. Whenever the crocodile dies a natural death, another one appears such that there is only one crocodile in the lake at any given time. Call me superstitious but, I feel some things do not always have a scientific reasoning. What are your experiences and take on such things? Would love to know in the comments below.
