Kuro. Japanese for black; kisume, an obsession with beauty. Indeed, these are themes featuring prominently at Chris Lucas' latest moneybags project: a 3-story Japanese restaurant draped in darkness and mystique that does just about everything. However, notwithstanding the plethora of seating options, there is one table that is literally above the rest: The Table.

At its heart, kaiseki - about which readers of recent posts of mine will have learned a thing or two. At The Table, it's kaiseki using Australian produce, headed by a Korean chef no less. Is it a traditional experience? Perhaps not. But bringing Japan to Australia was never the goal.

Dining at Attica four times over the past three years has afforded the great pleasure of directly observing Ben Shewry's cooking evolving from strength to strength - for the most part. My first few visits frequently yielded disagreements between my taste buds and what came out of the kitchen. For example, cooking fish in bark seems like a cool idea - less so when the bark overstays its welcome. In my latest visit, the savoury courses have never been better - and yes, that bark dish has since been dramatically improved.

However, as the most underwhelming part of the meal, the desserts continue to need work, and plenty of it. A mere sorbet and some riffs on Fantales just doesn't cut it for 'World's 50 Best'. Nevertheless, always looking forward to my next visit - and really, that's when a restaurant's truly won you over, right?

A cafe in Perth that stands toe to toe with Sydney's best in Mediterranean isn't just a relative compliment. It's a sign of quality irrespective of relativity. I'm not so sure about the Turkish coffee, but @kazoomies' variations on baked eggs are as substantial as they are delicious. Amazing pita bread too ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Something I'm going to try and do more of in 2018 is to post eats from Australian restaurants other than just Sydney - such as Perth, where you can have your pasta and still pay off a mortgage on the side (cue ๐Ÿ˜ฃ). @lululadelizia's been on my Perth radar for a long time now and while it's certainly fallen victim to overhyped, I can see why people rave - it simple nails it on the flavour, while ensuring the pasta is cooked superbly. Can't ask for much more than that ๐Ÿ‘Œ

In Japanese tradition, Osechi Ryouri (ๅพก็ฏ€ๆ–™็†) describes the array of food eaten during the new year. As with much of Japanese cuisine, there's a plethora of variety, it's plenty healthy, beautifully presented in special bento-like boxes called Juubako (้‡็ฎฑ).
