Talk about a view! This is from up on the podium at the front of our annual General Conference (#IAEAGC) just before it opened. You can see hundreds of high level delegates gathering to take part in considering and deciding on various topics related to the IAEA, such as its budget and programme and resolutions aimed at strengthening work in nuclear science and technology, safety, security, safeguards, and technical cooperation. It’s a week-long event with meetings, side events, exhibits and more. The #IAEAGC is an important avenue for us and thousands of delegates to continue our collective work toward ensuring the safe, secure, and peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

Laure Sangely shows us around the IAEA’s Environmental Sample Laboratory: “When we receive samples, we use a mass spectrometer to analyze the isotopic properties of environmental samples.” Laure is a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Specialist and her job is to analyse samples to help the IAEA confirm the completeness of States’ nuclear declarations. These declarations are part of the safeguards process, and the samples are collected by safeguards inspectors while they are out in the field. “The environmental samples capture information about what was going on at a particular location, and we send the result of this analysis to evaluators to check findings against State declarations.” They do a ‘blind’ analysis, which means that the analysts are unaware of where a sample has been taken. “All samples are different, and impartiality is important. Whilst interpretation of the results is not our duty, the results we deliver are used to draw safeguards conclusions; so the analysis that we provide has to be reliable.” These safeguards conclusions are an important part of the IAEA’s work to ensure nuclear stays peaceful.

Our new donor wall! Unveiled today at the 61st #IAEAGC, this wall recognizes the contributions made toward renovating our nuclear applications laboratories — so far over €30 million has been raised — including new donations from the U.S. and. Germany announced today. The laboratories conduct applied and adaptive research to deliver countries worldwide with new and improved nuclear technologies and techniques in food and agriculture, human health, the environment and the use of nuclear scientific instruments. Many scientists go to the laboratories for training as well as technical analytical services. The ReNuAL project, which began in 2014, and now the ReNuAL+ that began in 2017, are major initiatives to renovate and upgrade the laboratories so they can keep helping people worldwide benefit from the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. *

Watching the transport of high enriched uranium (HEU) fuel from Ghana. These police officers are on guard. They are overseeing the transport of the safely and securely packaged fuel from Ghana’s only research reactor. The reactor will instead use low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel, and the HEU will be repatriated to China. This is part of three-year international project supported by the IAEA to decrease the proliferation risks associated with HEU fuel. HEU is an ingredient that can be used to create a nuclear device intended for malicious use. Since 1978, various research and test reactors around the world have been converted from HEU to LEU fuel with the aim of minimizing and eventually eliminating the civilian use of HEU. Converting HEU to LEU does not affect a research reactor’s capabilities. Once the conversion is done, the research and test reactors get back to work as tools in scientific research, education, training and industrial applications.

Out in #Vietnam to see how researchers use nuclear science to help farmers. One cool thing they came up with is called oligochitosan [OL-EE-GO-KITE-O-SAN]. It helps plants grow faster and bigger, and improves the plants’ immunity to disease and fungal infections. Can you guess what it’s made of? Shrimp shells! These processed and irradiated shrimp shells are non-toxic and leave no harmful residue behind, which is better for consumers and a big difference compared to conventional fungicides. After oligochitosan is made into a liquid, one teardrop is added per litre of water, which is then taken up by the plants. The plants then become more resistant to disease and, in some cases, certain fruits produced from oligochitosan-fed plants have been found to have longer shelf lives.

This tool is used to safely grab and lift sealed canisters holding treated and repackaged low-level radioactive waste. They are using it as they test the borehole disposal method. This method involves using the grabber tool to move sealed canisters of low-level radioactive waste and inserting them into a transfer cask. A transfer cask is a mobile container used for safely moving sources for disposal. In this case, the cask is moved over a borehole, which is a narrow hole drilled directly into the ground. Once over the hole, the engineers remove the bottom of the cask and safely lower the disposal canister into the hole through the transfer cask. The hole is then safely and securely covered. Geology and engineering experts are exploring this approach as a cost-effective, long-term option for safely disposing of low-level radioactive waste.

Looking at little baby cassava plants! Cassava, or sometimes called yucca, is a root vegetable eaten around the world. It’s often used in tapioca, for example. These little cassava plants were grown by scientists in the Central African Republic in Africa as part of their programme to grow more food to feed more people. What’s unique about their new plants is that they are better at resisting diseases and surviving in harsh climates compared to local plant varieties. The scientists speed up the natural process of spontaneous change by using radiation. This means instead of waiting decades to develop a new plant, it only takes a few years to home in on a new plant variety. It’s a much faster process. And once scientists are done with their work on the new plants, farmers will have a new way to reliably grow food to feed their families and sell at the market. (L. Gil)

#Onthisday in 1897, the famous nuclear scientist, Irène Joliot-Curie, was born! Following in the footsteps of her scientist parents, Marie and Pierre Curie, Irène is best known for her discovery of artificial radioactivity. Together with her husband, Frédéric Joliot-Curie, they synthesized short-lived radioisotopes by bombarding aluminium, boron, and magnesium with alpha particles. For this discovery, Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935. Their research was instrumental in the development of a range of applications, particularly in nuclear medicine where the use of artificial radioactivity was a major milestone for never-before-seen diagnostic and treatment options.

They say X marks the spot, and in this picture, the X is where the tumour is! What you see is a patient getting set up for radiotherapy treatment. The X and the green laser lines on her mask are placed there based on careful calculations done by health specialists, like medical physicists. They measure and plan exactly where the radiation will go to kill cancer cells, while keeping normal cells out of harm’s way. She wears this specially-tailored mask each time she goes for treatment to make sure the radiation hits exactly the same spot every time. The mask is also attached to the table to hold her head in place. That’s because she is not allowed to move even a little bit once the treatment begins to make sure the radiation stays as accurate as possible and only goes where it’s supposed to.
