The first Nobel laureate from Japan, Hideki Yukawa, was born 111 years ago #onthisday. He earned the prize for his work on nuclear forces.

After graduating from Kyoto Imperial University in 1929 with a degree in physics, Yukawa set out to explore the strong forces that hold together protons and neutrons in atomic nuclei.

He assumed that these forces come from particles and the relationship between the range of the force and the mass of the force-bearing particle. He called the particle a ‘meson’ and predicted that it should have a mass that is about 200 times greater than an electron. Following experiments years later that confirmed his predictions, Yukawa earned the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physics.

#Didyouknow that plant breeding has been going on for thousands of years?
Around 1930, plant breeders added a new tool to their toolkits: plant mutation breeding. This technique uses radiation to speed up the natural process of spontaneous change that normally takes hundreds of years to happen. They irradiate seeds, cuttings or other tissue of the plant, which is then planted in a sterile environment. Then as the plant grows, specialists look at how the plant has changed and study how these changes help the plant survive in different environments. Once they find the plants that work best for a certain environment, they breed this plant and collect its seeds for farmers to use. This helps farmers deal with problems like not having enough water, soil that is too salty, or weather that is too extreme. In the picture you see a variety of rice called Binadahn 7. It helps #Bangladeshi farmers grow more food in a shorter period of time compared to traditional rice varieties. This new rice variety was developed using plant mutation breeding. (📷: N. Jawerth)

The 60 million euro Saliera sculpture by Benvenuto Cellini was found in the woods outside Vienna, Austria #onthisday in 2005 after a three year investigation into its theft. Upon its return to the @Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, X-rays helped conservators evaluate the Cellini sculpture’s condition.

Using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) equipment supplied with the help of the IAEA, museum conservators confirmed the sculpture was relatively undamaged and that the highly valued piece was composed of up to 90% pure gold.

You’d never guess what’s in these boxes!

Every week in the Dominican Republic, the team receives millions of pupae of sterilized male Mediterranean fruit flies from Guatemala through the Punta Cana Airport. They are part of a programme to fight fruit flies that infest crops, like avocados, oranges, and papaya.

These insects have been sterilized using small doses of radiation, and once released, they mate with females in the wild, which results in no new flies being born.

The programme has been so successful that in July 2017, the Dominican Republic announced that it is officially free from the Mediterranean fruit fly.

Today, we celebrate the 193rd birth anniversary of English chemist, Sir Edward Frankland, known for his fundamental work on atoms, elements and structural chemistry.

One of Frankland’s major scientific legacies was his study of organometallic compounds in the early 1850s, when he concluded that atoms had a distinct ‘combining power,’ or as he called it, ‘atomicity’. In a 1852 publication, Frankland explained that the atoms of each chemical element could only bond with a fixed number of atoms of other elements. This concept, which forms the foundation of structural chemistry, is known as the theory of valence, a derivative from the Latin word, valere.

Happy birthday, William Prout!

#Onthisday in 1785, this English chemist and physician was born. He is most well-known for ‘Prout’s Hypothesis’, which stated that the atomic weights of elements are multiples of the atomic weight of hydrogen. While this turned out to not be entirely true, this early endeavor led to a better understanding of the existence of various chemical elements and atomic structures.

Resulting from his contributions to chemical physics, Prout was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1819. He also had a unit of nuclear binding energy named after him, the "Prout”, though this unit is no longer used.

#Onthisday, we celebrate the birthday of Wilhelm Wien! This German physicist won a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking work on thermal radiation.

Wien is most well-known for his work on the radiation of heat, which led him to come up with the displacement (1893) and distribution laws (1896). The displacement law states that the wavelength emitted from a blackbody — an ideal substance that absorbs and emits all radiation— is inversely proportional to the temperature of the blackbody, while his distribution law is the law of physics used to describe the spectrum of radiation emissions from a blackbody. Wien won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1911 for his work.

His work on cathode rays and canal rays later led to the development of mass spectrometry, which is commonly used today to better understand and calculate the energies released by nuclear reactions.

Nuclear medicine scans like PET, or positron emission tomography, and CT, or computed tomography, offer a look inside the body by using small amounts of radioactive material called radioisotopes, specialized cameras, and computers. The radioisotopes are inside of specialized drugs called radiopharmaceuticals. Once the radiopharmaceuticals are inside the body, the cameras scan the body and detect the small levels of radiation coming from the radioisotopes. The information the camera collects is then processed by a computer to create images of what’s happening inside of the body.
