On Dec. 5, BI Tech shared a photo of 28 new emoji with a caption that read, “Here’s your first look at all new emoji coming next year.” The image attached to the tweet includes emoji with what appears to be natural curly hair and straight gray hair, as well as some with bald heads.⠀

Adding emoji with natural hair textures does reflect progress toward making everyone feel like they can personally identify with these characters. But a significant number of people questioned the actual design.⠀

One person asked, “Is that supposed to be natural hair?” Another responded with, “My hair does not look like that,” and a flutter of others echoed the same feelings.⠀

Lin-Manuel Miranda wants Congress to know that it’s in their best interest to help the people of Puerto Rico.⠀

Nearly three months after Hurricane Maria devastated the U.S. territory, 36.5 percent of the island still has no power and at least 7 percent of residents don’t have running water, according to government statistics. The dire situation has pushed hundreds of Puerto Ricans, many of whom lost homes and jobs in the aftermath of Maria, to flee the island ― for the U.S. mainland.⠀

Miranda criticized the U.S. government’s response to the hurricane as “painfully slow” in a Washington Post op-ed, published Wednesday. He warned Congress that there would be political consequences if nothing was done to help Puerto Rico. ⠀

Who better to top your tree this holiday season than Beyoncé, Serena Williams or Hillary Clinton?

We’ll probably be hearing a lot more about Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). Here’s why.

The 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards has made a notable change: Only women will present this year’s accolades. ⠀

All 13 of the evening ceremony’s honors will be doled out by women, led by host Kristen Bell, on Jan. 21.⠀

Although the group has yet to disclose the entire all-female list of presenters, the influential guild decided to exclude men after a series of sexual misconduct accusations toppled powerful figures in Hollywood. ⠀

Joe Biden comforted Meghan McCain on "The View" because his late son, Beau, had the same cancer diagnosis as Meghan’s father, Sen. John McCain.

White people were thanking black women on social media after Doug Jones won the Senate seat in Alabama after he defeated Roy Moore. ⠀

There’s no great mystery why black women mobilized Tuesday. They had to protect themselves ― from conservative policies that seek to undermine the well-being of the black community.⠀

God is a black woman, someone said. “Trust a black woman” and “Let black women run things” were commonly expressed sentiments. Black pixie dust was falling all over liberal America.⠀

But DeJuana Thompson and Carissa Crayton know the real story: There is nothing magical about the straightforward, unlovely work of organizing that goes into black political achievement.⠀

“This is not something that I just happened upon. This is something I learned. This is something that I worked on. I’ve been in my field for 15 years,” said Thompson. “That is not magic, that is perseverance. That is the embodiment of investing in myself and in my craft. And that craft — just like so many other black women — our craft is creating spaces for other people to be successful.”⠀
