Hope for Henry is very excited to be the #funder and co-author of this #study in partnership with @childrenshealth to understand how Virtual Reality might decrease the need for medication for children undergoing painful procedures. "Children's National Health System recently began its own study of VR to better understand the most effective kinds of content to offer, said Dr. Julia Finkel, director of research and development of the pain medicine initiative within the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. The hospital is also examining how much time a patient should use VR therapy in order to get the optimal benefit.
'You're changing the brain architecture, in effect,' Finkel said, saying VR seems to activate areas of the brain that modulate pain perception. 'It doesn't change the fact there is a painful stimulus going on. But the pain perception is reduced, and that's the goal when giving the opioid as well.'" #hopeforhenry #childrenshealth #virtualreality #research #pediatrics
