Myrtle Beach High Senior wins award from SC Press Association. Katelyn DuBose, a senior at Myrtle Beach High School, won first place in Feature Photography at the 2018 South Carolina Press Association’s Annual Meeting held March 16-17 in Spartanburg. The winning photograph, titled “Riding for a Reason”, was featured in an article about the 36th Annual American Heart Association’s Beach Ride, published by Tom O’Dare in the Myrtle Beach Herald (myhorrynews.com) on November 5, 2017.
DuBose’s photography caught the attention of O’Dare, who is now retired from being the editor of the Myrtle Beach Herald, when he was the Principal for a Day at Myrtle Beach High School last October. While he was originally looking for someone to help with sports photography, O’Dare says he realized DuBose had “an eye” for photography and he was able to showcase her talent in printed and online versions of The Myrtle Beach Herald.

O’Dare secretly nominated “Riding for a Reason” for the SCPA award where the young, amateur photographer was judged against seasoned journalists throughout South Carolina. DuBose has been accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design and hopes to attend next fall.
