Adapting a technique used by astronomers, researchers have developed a microscope capable of capturing cells inside living organisms in unprecedented detail. Here, researchers used the new technology to visualize a zebrafish eye and then computationally “explode” the cells, allowing them to study detailed nuances of cell behavior in their native state. #HarvardMed #microscope

In a stand for social justice and against racism, HMS students and faculty joined others in medical schools throughout the country in a “die-in” demonstration to support White Coats for Black Lives. #HarvardMed #whitecoats4blacklives

Harvey Cushing, often referred to as the father of neurosurgery, helped establish neurological surgery as a viable medical specialty. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1895, and went on to become professor of surgery at HMS and the surgeon-in-chief at the Peter Brent Brigham Hospital (now @brighamandwomens). He is pictured here operating before the Harvey Cushing Society at its inaugural meeting in 1932. #HarvardMed #tbt

@countwaylibrary is one of the largest medical libraries in the world. The library holds more than 630,000 volumes, subscribes to 3,500 current journal titles and houses over 10,000 non-current biomedical journal titles. It also offers a quiet place to study on the Harvard Longwood Campus. #HarvardMed #medicallibrary

Researchers have identified a “genetic switch” that can increase the number of signals between dentate gyrus cells (green) and CA3 interneurons (red) in the hippocampus region of the brain. Altering this neural pathway can slow down memory generalization, the loss of specific details over time that occurs with aging and in post-traumatic stress disorder. There may still be snow on the ground, but there are signs of spring on the HMS campus. #HarvardMed #firstdayofspring

Today is Match Day, when members of the HMS Class of 2018 learn where they will spend their residencies. Congratulations to all of our students who matched! #HarvardMed #matchday2018

The 2018 Longwood Seminars opened last night, with hundreds braving the winter weather to hear Harvard Medical School scientists discuss the art of aging well. This was the first of four seminars in the 2018 season. On Wednesday, March 28, Harvard Medical School experts will explore the science of pain, the realities of prescription drug dependence and new discoveries and treatments that may lead to better, safer pain management. #HarvardMed #HMSMiniMed
