On the next stop on our cross-country journey through photography, images by Ben Shahn and Walker Evans shed light on life in Depression-era ARKANSAS. In the 1930s, the extreme poverty of the Great Depression was exacerbated by flood, drought and low farm prices in Arkansas and the Mississippi River Delta. As Chief of the Historical Section for the Farm Security Administration, Roy Stryker directed a team of photojournalists that included Shahn and Evans, as well as Dorothea Lange and Marion Post Wolcott, to take thousands of pictures with the goal of “introducing America to Americans.”

Georgina Rayner, associate conservation scientist in our Straus Center, uses a tool called a microfader to test the light sensitivity of a section of Winslow Homer’s “Watching the Tempest.”

The microfader performs accelerated light aging tests directly on an object, focusing a beam of light less than half a millimeter wide on the surface of the object and monitoring the resulting color change (which is imperceptible to the human eye.)

Microfading tests are currently being performed on a number of Winslow Homer’s watercolor drawings in the collections, in preparation for a 2019 exhibition of his artwork. #ArtMeetsScience #WinslowHomer #HarvardArtMuseums

One of the archives' most recently processed collections are the records of Schneider/Erdman, Inc. and the papers of Gary Schneider. Included in the Schneider/Erdman documents is correspondence from Sally Mann, who wrote her letters on the back of her photographs, folded them up, and mailed them to Schneider. Peter Hujar’s portraits collectively record the world of “downtown” New York in the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s.
