I made the images for Alec Finlay's project - Counterpane - commissioned by Macmillan Cancer Support for their new centre in Arbroath.
Creating landscapes out of bedding - it's a project for those who can't climb mountains because of illness.
I was waiting for my own appointment at their centre in London when I got the email which felt quite suitable.
Thank you Alec for giving me work that can be done from bed! @macmillancancer

Last summer I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
I had 2 surgeries within a month and was prescribed a pill to take each day to replace my thyroid function. I was told I wouldn’t notice any difference, and that I was lucky to have had an “easy cancer”.
I soon realised that the pill they had prescribed (T4 or Levothyroxine) wasn’t working for me and despite recovering from the surgeries, I began racking up a growing list of debilitating symptoms.
Since then my life has stopped - I have felt unwell everyday for over a year. I'm unable to do anything. I've had to pull out of amazing work and special events with friends.
I've learned that if you are one of the 15% who can’t tolerate T4, doctors don’t know what to do with you, and most of them don’t want to know. I learned that medical knowledge in this area is majorly lacking and that so many other people are suffering because of it.
I tried a second, and then a 3rd type of medication - the 3rd being the last option.
I am persevering with the third option (T3 or Liothyronine), it is an incredibly challenging medication to take and it hasn't done it for me yet, but it is my only option.
If this weren’t a crap enough situation to be in already, the NHS are proposing to ban this medication from being prescribed. Only 1 pharmaceutical company have the licence to sell it to the the NHS and they have exploited a loophole which has enabled them to inflate the price by over 5000%.
My monthly prescription costs the NHS close to £1000 when the same amount can be bought in Europe for less than £10. Rather than addressing the price hike with the pharmaceutical company responsible however, the NHS are opting to withdraw the medication upon which mine and many other lives are dependant upon.
I would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to sign the petition, linked in my profile, asking for improved treatment for patients such as myself as well as stopping T3 from being withdrawn. Thank you to those who already have. ••• This image is from a new project - Counterpane by Alec Finlay - commissioned by @macmillancancer
