Sunday spent clearing out my closet. I’ve come to the realisation that 95% of my clothes are gym / active wear lol 😩. Nothing wrong with that but I think I need to invest in some more evening / casual clothing! I still love these threads though..

Some negative souls have alluded that I train so much because all I care about is my appearance. They are not the same species as me and many of you guys too. I’m a competitor. I train because I want to win, not have my ego massaged by onlookers. I am comfortable in myself enough to need no external gratification from others. I guess some people will never understand what it means to be driven by a goal.

While the temperature is 37000 degrees right now here in Australia and I’m not watching my calories, sure I’ll grab a beer or two. Everything in moderation I think.

Let’s look at the facts though. One of two immediate starting points I’ll look at with my clients is do you drink and if so how much? (The other is what coffee do you drink and how many a day do you drink?) Alcohol carries with it 7 calories per gram, but they’re completely empty, useless calories. In fact while the body is completely preoccupied with metabolising the alcohol you’ve just consumed, it completely forgets to break down fats and carbs which quickly get stashed away as adipose (fat) tissue.

In addition to this it will not only dehydrate you which has a derogatory effect on protein synthesis, but also a lack of water can actually contribute to a catabolic effect on your muscles. So things aren’t looking good for the social drinker who wants to get in shape.

When I’m with clients who want to lose weight or build muscle, I am an advocate for moderation, however, I always make sure they acknowledge that there will be a correlation (taking into account other factors of course) between their lifestyle choices with regards to alcohol, and the fitness goals they kick.

For myself personally, when I’m cutting or prepping there’s no way in hell i’m touching a drop (maybe a glass of rum pre-stage) as I’m not going to jeopardise the goals I’ve set for myself. Discipline is always a choice. The guys allllll know not to bother inviting me out to get loose lol. Am I considered a boring bastard for making that choice? Almost definitely, but fk it, my life, my goals, my choices.

As a coach and trainer I’ve heard it all:

“But I’ve got a kids and a wife, I don’t have the time” - make time. We all have the same amount of time granted to us. Is you really want something you’ll prioritise it and find time from something else that’s less important. Pretty sure your wife wouldn’t want an obese husband anyway and your kids might appreciate kicking a ball with their dad without him having a coronary.

“I have to work” - most people do. Try prepping; cardio in the morning at 4am, teaching a full days classes to switched on seniors, going back to the gym after work, then spending time with your family before doing all over again. That’s an 18 hour day in itself and I managed it for 5 years.

“I’m not 21 anymore, I just don’t have the energy” - I’m on the cusp of turning 40, meaning technically in some federations I could compete in masters bodybuilding. Another void argument. I’m not special and if I can do it, anybody can..

“I gotta have some sort of life, I want to continue partying and having a social life” - great! Good for you and moderation is everything! Just don’t fkn moan to me that you’re not fulfilling your physique goals or can’t get shredded enough because you’re still drinking alcohol.

It could honestly go on forever and I know @logan_robson totally agrees being the grumpy bastard he is lol. If you want something, and I mean totally want something then you commit to it, do as you’re coach tells you, don’t stray, don’t make excuses (because somewhere in the world many people are doing exactly what you’re moaning about) and knuckle down and DO THE WORK. Whatever it fkn takes.
