Repost from #mexopolis: Art school family and friends, I’m afraid I can’t attend Greg’s memorial today. I’m still not there yet.
In his honor, here’s a little Greg story since I keep thinking of our times together.
One of our favorite topics was discussing Greg's questionable Spanish. And of course, he was always trying to learn the newest and slangiest curse words and phrases. So one night I'm having a drink with him in a bar and four angry gangbangery looking guys walk in and sit next to us. One of them said something really rude to the waitress. Being the brave gentleman that he was, Greg just unleashes his "greatest hits" of Spanish cursing. The guys were speechless for a few seconds and then we all burst out laughing. By the end of the night we were all having a blast as he invited them to my opening. That was Greg, he could diffuse any drama and bring anyone together for art and artists. And yes, two of those guys showed up to the opening. One bought a painting.
Rest in piece, mi amigo. #GregEscalanteFOREVER
