BREAKING: Wilmar is the largest palm oil trader in the world and the single biggest threat to Indonesian forests. The makers of Kit-Kat, Colgate toothpaste, Johnson’s Baby Lotion, Dove, Doritos, Kellogg’s Pop Tarts, Ritz crackers, M&M’s, Head & Shoulders are some of their biggest customers. Tell them to #DropDirtyPalmOil. Link in our bio. .

“We wanted to bring a darker element into it, as this is not a happy topic. The massive amount of forest destroyed every hour, so many animals getting killed, this was something that had to be incorporated into the mural as well. And Lilo had the idea to use the wall structure to show the darker side as well. In the end the image is a colorful piece, that’s slowly getting burned, and you get a glimpse of all the destruction when you look down. Just as with a piece of paper on fire, it’s time to stop it from burning any further. So everyone should demand their products to be clean of dirty palm oil as soon as possible.”

We are Kathi Macheiner and Lilo Krebernik(@adhocpad). We’re a creative duo with 4 kids and everything we do has a big focus on our children: this led to home-/unschooling and a lot of our projects have a social component in it. For this project, we invited Frau Isa (@frauisa), one of the most outstanding female artist in our network to join us. .
We, street artists and volunteers, are taking over the Greenpeace Instagram feed to draw attention to rainforest destruction and to join the movement to protect the forests of Indonesia through our art. Check link in the bio for more details.

“The imagery I chose for the walls I painted for the #WingsofParadise was primarily based on the Birds of Paradise as their home, Indonesian forests, are in danger due to the deforestation of their natural habitat by industrial farming for palm oil. I used the first wall to contain a strong typographical message about this problem backed up by a mural on the main wall using my usual distinctive style and imagery that included a number of birds of paradise as well as tree stumps as a subtle representation of the deforestation that’s occurring. The small third wall contains the Greenpeace logo, hashtag #WingsofParadise and a small painting of a bird. Basically using three walls to represent everything this project is about.”

I believe that a piece of great art should not only attract the attention from the people away from their phone but raise the awareness of the public about this project. I actually didn't pick any specific type of the birds but it's a combination of all the Birds of Paradise I searched. I consider that mutualism is the key to strike the balance between human and nature. I am convinced that human don't need to destroy the environment to get what they want. The spirit also lives in this work, a piece of street art appearing in the prosperous city centre, and, it looks good! During the process of making this mural, Taiwan went through extreme weather in the city - biggest rain in the whole summer, the highest temperature and the typhoon Mangkhut! I realise the importance of environmental protection and the urgency to stop the deforestation in Indonesia.

“This project is completely aligned with my approach of being a “committed” street artist. When I paste the Birds of Paradise, I want to alert people to the destruction of palm-oil led deforestation and its impact on wildlife.
.
I’ve been drawing since childhood. In particular, animals: wolves, deers, dogs, horses. In the 90s, after a beautiful photo safari in Kenya, I began to paint animals to capture my emotions.
.
Then the graphic palette and computer allowed me to explore other techniques. At first, I was making photoshop montages of my illustrations of animals on pictures of doorways or barns. A friend of mine asked me why I wasn’t doing it in real life. The street artist Urbanimal Jean was born that day. .
For almost 5 years I have been pasting on city walls: Paris, Arles, Marseille, Lille, Vitry, Bondy, and also in Brittany, in Champagne, even in Sardinia. I paste endangered wild species threatened by poaching or deforestation, and I’m trying to "reintroduce" them in the cities. It’s a way of questioning and informing people about the urgency of the situation. There is still not much awareness for the majority of the population - it seems to me that it’s fundamental to work on that issue.”

“My piece depicts the Ribbon Tailed Astrapia, set in a forest landscape that is being destroyed. .
I feel strongly about what is taken from our planet and put into our supermarkets with little thought, consideration or education on the impact to the planet and nature. When I heard about the #WingsOfParadise campaign I immediately wanted to contribute to the cause. .
I hope that the #WingsOfParadise campaign can impact people’s awareness about products that use palm oil bought from rainforest destroyers.
.
My painting was completed over 4 days with great support from Geelong City Council, the building owner and tenants. So many people approached me during the installation of the piece and were intrigued as to why I was painting a bird of paradise, which lead to a conversation about palm oil and deforestation. A conversation that I hope will continue.”

47 years ago, the very first Greenpeace voyage departed from Vancouver to to halt nuclear tests in Amchitka Island. We’ve come a long way since then and we know that, along with every single one of you, we won’t stop until a green and peaceful future is secured to all of us 💚 ✊ .

What happens to forests happens to us all. This is even more true to Sámi people whose way of life depends on nature. Now the Finnish government is betting that the melting Arctic will provide a trade route to exploit their lands: more pulp mills, more logging and more mines.
But the Sámi are defending their forests, land and existence.

Have you seen the wild weather activity that encircled the planet this week?

Our thoughts are with those bearing the brunt of super Typhoon #Mangkhut in south and east Asia, and #HurricaneFlorence which is bearing down on the USA.

Climate change is making storms like these more intense and more frequent. It's time we hold those responsible to account.
