2019: Obasanjo, Amosun Drum Support for Ogun West

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State have justified why the Ogun West Senatorial District should produce the next governor of the state in 2019.

They spoke in Abeokuta at the 80th birthday ceremony of a former Secretary to the State Government, Deacon Poju Adeyemi yesterday, stressing that the people of Ogun West are competent, qualified and capable of governing the state.

Obasanjo said it will be unfair to deny Ogun West the governorship position in 2019, after more than 40 years of the creation of the state.

He said Ogun West has credible, illustrious and competent professionals in all sphere of endeavour, such as academia, military, civil service and politics.

However, the former president warned the people of Ogun West to sink their differences and come up with a single candidate in the forthcoming elections.

He said the zone has been unable to present a single candidate in previous elections, due to their political rivalry.

According to him, the people of Ogun East Senatorial District have been out smarting Ogun West in previous elections, by standing behind a single, united candidate.

Amosun, while eulogising the celebrant, said the only way to make him happy for the rest of his life, is to make sure that a candidate from Ogun West emerges as the next governor of Ogun State in 2019.

He said the district should produce the next governor in the spirit of justice, equity and fairness.
The governor said the people of Ogun West have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Ogun State, adding that the only way to compensate them is to give them the governorship slot in 2019.

He urged all stakeholders in the state to see reason with him, in ensuring that a candidate from Ogun West takes over from him in May 2019.

Prominent personalities at the birthday ceremony included the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade, Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Suraj Adekunbi, members of the Ogun State Executive Council and members of the Ogun State Traditional Council.

Coordinator, Nigeria Initiative for Economic Development (NIED) , Dr. Alfred Tofade, who gave this indication yesterday, said the group is set to build a top class estate, which will be a Mini Smart City in the state.

Tofade had led his team, which joined a delegation of the Nigerian-American Chambers of Commerce, to pay a courtesy visit to Governor Ibikunle Amosun in his Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta office yesterday.
He spoke about the passion of the NIED to contribute to the development in Nigeria, especially in Ogun State, adding that the proposed city will include  medical facilities of international standard, institutions of learning, recreational centres and professional libraries.

National President of the Nigeria-America Chambers of Commerce, Chief Bintan Famutimi, in his contribution, noted that the bane of Nigerian businesses and business men is the fact that they have goods, which are unknown, urging the government to incorporate the private sector in all its programs, in order to make it work.

Responding, Amosun emphasised  the need to tap into the experience of Nigerians in Diaspora, for development back home.

He urged Nigerians in Diaspora to intensify their support for the state, because, "nobody will come and develop the country for us, except Nigerians themselves show the commitment to play critical role." The governor further stated that before the inception of his administration, Ogun State was on the last rung of the ladder in terms of ease of doing business, but that now, it occupies between the first and fifth position.

He attributed this to his government's efforts at creating an enabling environment, not only in the ease of doing business, but also for the businesses to thrive.

Ogun Clears Air on $350m World Bank Facility, Says it is Concessionary

The Ogun State government has explained that the budget support facility from the World Bank is concessionary.

It debunked reports in a segment of the media, suggesting that the House of Representatives rejected the request of the state government, for the concessionary facility from the Word Bank, when it  met  the officials of states seeking foreign loan approvals at the National Assembly in Abuja, last Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference in Abeokuta yesterday, the State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Ms. Denrele Adesina, said the meeting with the House of Representatives Committee was preliminary.

According to her, "contrary to speculations in the media, the approval process for the budget support facility is ongoing, as the state government officials only had a preliminary meeting with the House Committee on Loans, Aids and Debt Management." She explained that the budget support facility was at a rock bottom interest of two percent with a five-year moratorium and redeemable for 25 years. "The World Bank Budget support is for states that have demonstrated ability for proven results. The leap of Ogun State from 35th position in 2010 to one of the best five in 2014 in terms of Ease of Doing Business, transparency, growth in IGR, among others, has impressed the global institution, and is ever willing to partner with our government. "The World Bank is concerned about the welfare of the people of Ogun State. It is interested in capacity building, through education, development of agriculture, improved health care delivery. "The Amosun administration has met the benchmarks on these. The World Bank looks forward to partnering with such states to achieve its global objectives of development," she submitted.
