👯‍♀️8-week L-Ascorbic Acid Comparison Results👯‍♀️
.
But first...some Important Context (sorry, I can't NOT give caveats😬🤷‍♀️)
.
➖When I started this comparison I had already been consistently using L-Ascorbic acid serums for months. So I was really at a maintenance stage in terms of my pigmentation. I was using Paula's Choice for 3 months prior to this (which was gifted but I have also purchased 3 bottles in the past), & then before that I was using #Maelove Glow Maker, & before that I was comparing #Skinceuticals CE Ferulic with Timeless (reviews are all up on my blog).
🔅Both the @drunkelephant and #paulaschoice products were gifted with no expectations for review🔅
.
➖Vit C does more than just fade pigmentation but that is the easiest thing to look for in before and after photos (hence why I've posted some 📸). But there are more effects (like AOX protection and reducing collagen degradation that you can't see in photos.
.
🔅Everyone's skin is different and YMMV!🔅
.
📊Bottom line: I really like both of these products and I think they both performed equally well! Below are some other thoughts.
.
⚖️Pros for @paulaschoice Choice
PC has a better price per ounce(this is a major factor for me since I would need to replace it every 3 months), it is available at more retailers that have frequent sales (like at paulaschoice.com, @dermstore, and @skinstore), and it has a texture that I prefer.
.
⚖️Pros for Drunk Elephant
I love the Drunk Elephant twist-top airless pump and I like that it has additional brightening ingredients and gentle enzyme exfoliants (however, in 8 weeks I don't think I've seen any additional brightening compared to PC side).
.
➖With DE you get more, but if you use it every day it (like I do) it will last about the same amount of time as PC. If you plan to use it a bit more infrequently, the DE could potentially last you 6 months. So for people that use Vit C infrequently, DE would be the better option (aiming to buy it during #Sephorasale when possible).

Day 15 of #skinemmies2018 is Favorite Mask. Here are my picks!
🥇 @Tula Kefir Ultimate Recovery Mask - $56 for 2.5 oz ($22.40 per oz). I originally received this in PR & then I promptly went out & bought a backup bc I love it (& there was a great sale going on so I had to jump on it). I put a thick layer on & leave it on for AT LEAST 30 min. It doesn't dry down, it is so comfortable to wear (bonus points for smelling like apple-vanilla ice cream and having a pretty iridescent color). When I wipe it off with a wet towel my skin is immediately plump & hydrated. (I have tried a lot of "hydrating mask" that never seemed to actually make my skin plump & hydrated, so when I found this one I was so excited)
.
🥈 @thegranolagoat S.O.S. mask - $19 for 2 oz ($9.50 per oz) I think by having it as a dry mask it makes it INCREDIBLY versatile bc it let's you choose your liquid (think outside of the box and try things other than water). TIPS: If you want to mix this with other anti-inflammatory ingredients, consider products with: aloe vera or witch hazel. When it comes to acne-fighting ingredients, it can be combined with salicylic acid, AHAS, etc. My favorite way to use this is to just dab some of the dry mask on top of any spots while my skin is still damp form my P.M. skin care routine so the dry powder just sticks to the spot. This is my "maintenance" approach. To keep those bumps from forming into anything. If I have a big blemish I will make a paste and leave it on for an hour.
.
🥉 @maylindstromskin Honey Mud: $90 for 3.4 ounces ($26.47 per oz)
I am obsessed with the decadent and amazing scent that the Honey Mud has (It smells like cocoa, honey, orange goodness). It creates a relaxing experience when I wear it. I will usually put this on and leave it on for a long time (sometimes hours...). I use this when my skin is inflammed post-breakout or when I just want to help balance out the skin and leave it moisturized.
.
🏅Honorable Mention: @origins  mega mushroom relief & resilience soothing gave mask. $40/ 3.4 oz. This is my go to for when i really want to soothe my skin, calm redness and leave a layer of hydration. .

Day 13 of #skinemmies2018 is #FavoriteSPF
Suncreen is the MOST important product in my skincare routine because without it, all of the serums, boosters, creams are essentially useless. I wear sunscreen year round even in frigid, gray MN ☁️🌥because it isn't just about protecting my skin from burns, but also UVA. (@labmuffinbeautyscience has some AMAZING posts and videos on the topic of SPF that I highly recommend). I aim for SPF 50 is because it’s best to choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with as high an SPF possible for better UVA protection. In most countries if it says 'broad spectrum', the UVA protection must be at least 1/3 of the SPF value.
.
OK on to my picks💃
.
🥇My pick for number 1 was a no-brainer. And if you've followed me for a while I bet you could guess what it was 😆
@beautyrx #solardefense Sheer Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 - $42 for 2.5 oz ($16.80/oz). [The best place to get it is at @dermstore when they have 20% off sales.] This is a blend of organic (chemical) & inorganic (physical) SPF (10.5% Zinc and 7.5% Octinoxate). I adore this sunscreen because I love the creamy texture that is easy to blend in and I love how it almost feels like a primer under my makeup. Some people experience pilling, but for whatever reason I haven't had an issue (and I've gone through 3 bottles). I rub this in (I never pat it on) after my moisturizer and it doesn't leave a white cast and it seems to help control my oil. 🙌🏻 I am so in love with this SPF that it is hard for me to even use anything else.
.
🥈 @maeloveskincare The Sun Protector Sheer Mineral Sunscreen, Broad spectrum SPF 30* - $17.95 for 1.7 oz. ($10.56/oz). Non-nano 18% Zinc Oxide formula that goes on so easily and works great under makeup.It has some AOX included in the INCI which I like. It doesn't leave a white cast on my skin though on deeper complexions you may find a slight white cast.
.
🥉 @drdennisgross Skincare Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50* - $42 for 1.7 oz ($24.71/oz). This is pricier but it also has AOX (E.G.,Ascorbyl Glucoside is high up in INCI), peptides, and almond, olive and evening primrose oils to moisturize skin.
.
(See an honorary mention in Comment below 👇🏻)

I've fallen behind on the #skinemmies2018 😞😞 but I'll try to catch up on some of them. Next up -- favorite body products!
.
🥇 @mynuface #NuBody - at @dermstore for $399 (but there are often coupon codes or deals you can find). I received this in PR back in Feb. and used it for 4 mths consistently ( 2-3 times a week for 15 min each time). I started to see subtle results at mth 2 and the biggest improvement at month 3. (I'm not going to show my before & after pics because my bare backside is not about to grace the internet)
.
Just like NuFace, NuBody uses microcurrent to help tone and firm skin. But it uses a much stronger current (Max output is 900 μA for NuBody versus 400 μA for NuFace). The claim on the website says it would smooth away the look of dimples. I would agree with that claim, with some caveats. It did smooth more surface dimples, but one deep dimple didn't show any change. I also used it above my knee caps (where I feel like I have saggy skin) and it seem to tighten that skin a little. Here's the caveat... Even with seeing amazing results it is still hard to motivate myself to use it regularly bc it takes about 15 minutes total (20 if I really wanted to get the back and front of legs). In fact, after I took the "after" pics that I was so excited about, life got hectic and I didn't use it again for 2 months. 🙈 But 1 month before a beach party I used it nearly every day and I felt like it gave me really good results. It's a "use it or lose it" kind of results. But I'm just happy it actually works!
.
🥈 Twin-labs Na-PCA (Usually around $12). Na-PCA (sodium PCA) is the second ingredient (after water) and is a “skin-identical” ingredient and a great natural moisturizer that helps skin hold onto water and stay hydrated. I have recommended this to anyone that will listen and will continue to repurchase. I spray this on my skin to help with dry, scaley skin. I almost always layer a lotion on top, but even if I don’t do that step, this still helps to lock in moisture and soften skin.
.
(Cont. In comments)

Using Vit A is something that I think is a must, especially since I just shy of 36. About a year ago I stopped using my prescription retinol to opt for a more slow & steady approach and I much prefer this approach bc I don't have the annoying flakey and sensitive skin that I used to get. #Retinol is said to be 10-20x less potent than retinoic acid, but that doesn't mean it is less effective--in fact, even a lower concentration can produce similar results over time (Babcock et al, 2015). The over time part is key. Changes don't happen over night but I've seen changes with consistent usage. I've been trying a bunch of different products to find my favorites that I can stick with. So I like products that I can use nearly every night of the week and that easily integrate into my routines.
.
@madhippie vitamin A serum* - $32.99 for 1 oz
.
@sundayriley luna sleeping night oil - $105 for 1.18oz
.
@biopelle KNR brightening serum* - $120 for 1oz
.
@skinbetter AlphaRet overnight cream - $110 for 1oz
.
@alliesofskin bright future overnight facial* - $120 for 1.69oz ($71 for 1oz) ^^in my pic I should have said the % of RetinAl not retinOl is low. But also, it turns out it isn't so low after all 🤷‍♀️ but I do still think of this and treat this more as an AHA treatment bc of the concentration of AHAs
.
@Peterthomasroth retinol fusion PM* - $65 for 1oz
.
@envymedical trifecting night cream 0.2* - $85/1.7oz ($50 per 1oz)
.
@paulaschoice 1% Retinol Booster - $52 for 0.5oz ($104 for 1oz)
.
@jordansamuelskin Etoile with retinol - $43 for 1oz
.
@shanidarden resurface - $95 for 1oz
.
#A313 £6.99 (in Paris)
.
How I apply: (except for the oil-retinoid products) 1. cleanse, 2. retinoid, wait for it for absorb, 3. Rest of routine.
For products housed in oil I do my routine & I try to keep it minimal so there aren't a ton of layers & I apply those last.

Day 9 of #skinemmies2018 is "Favorite Multi-tasker" and for me that is Retinoids (Vit A)
.
I have been confused by the different forms of Vit A in the past, especially when I switched over from prescription retinol to OTC options. Then, I noticed that the different Vit A products I was using all seemed to have a different form of Vit A. 🧐 So I created an infographic to basically serve as a cheat sheet for me, but hopefully others appreciate it as well. 😊
Later tonight (or tomorrow because I think I may FINALLY see a A Start is Born tonight🙌🏻) I will post the various Vit A products that I've used. But my top 2 at the moment are @skinbetter #Alpharet and @envymedical #trifectingnightcream
.
Other than Retinoids, my other two favorite multi-taskers are #VitaminC in the form of L-Ascorbic Acid and #Niacinamide.
.
Niacinamide can help with enlarged pores and uneven skin tone and texture. It can also reduce skin sensitivity and calm redness and even help refine the appearance of fine lines. Two of the correcting serums I talked about yesterday have Niacinamide high up in the INCI, but using @paulaschoice 10% Niacinamide has been a game changer for my skin in terms of redness and skin tone.
.
Vitamin C - reduces collagen degradation (which helps reduce appearance of wrinkles and fine lines), fades hyperpigmentation, and protects the skin against sun damage. You all know that I love #paulaschoice and @maelove the glow maker (reviews are up on blog). But I also really like @drunkelephant C-Firma too.The main downside of C-Firma IMHO is the size (I wish it was in a smaller bottle like Paula's Choice) and the high cost. But I am very happy with the results that I have seen from all three of these.
.
Having Vit C, Vit A and, to a lesser extent, Niacinamide in my #skincareroutine is a nonnegotiatable. 🤷‍♀️👍🏻💕

Day 8 of the #skinemmies2018 is #favoriteserum
.
This is THE HARDEST category bc I love serums the most. Spoiler, I had to break up my serums in categories bc I can not choose just three in a general "serum" category. So tomorrow I am focusing on Niacinamide, Vitamin C, and retinol and I am breaking up today'a post into #hydratingserums and #correctingserums
.
🌟Hydrating Serums🌟
Unlike the correcting serums that I posted about, i think everyone can benefit from a hydrating serum. What I've learned is that if my skin is dehydrated (like after a night of drinking or sun exposure) I get fine dehydration lines & my skin looks dull. #Hyaluronicacid is a large, water-loving molecule that can sit in fine lines, plumping up the skin to fill out those lines (but this effect is temporary). Another benefit is unlike my correcting serums, these offer almost instant results..
.
🥇 @jordansamuelskin #hydrateserum ($29/1oz) has been a staple since 2017. It has an aloe base, is soothing and the texture is perfection. In my highlights I have a story showing its texture... I’m on my 4th bottle and I've recommended it to basically anyone that will listen.
.
🥈 @SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel ($66/1oz) - In addition to being hydrating, this is amazing at soothing the skin. Especially post breakout. Also, when I have a sunburn or irritated skin, this feels amazing on the skin.
.
🥈 @tula Aqua Infusion Power Liquid* ($52/1oz) there is something just so refreshing about this serum. It's lighter than JSS but still deeply hydrating. It also had probiotics in the INCI (which I'm still not 100% convinced do anything, but maybe they do!). I love the packaging and am happy it's a pump bc I have dropped and spilled my JSS Hydrate serum more than once, and I can't do that with this one

Day 8 of the #skinemmies2018 hosted by @antiagingamber and @morethanjustskin is #favoriteserum
.
This is THE HARDEST category bc I love serums the most. Spoiler, I had to break up my serums in categories bc I can not choose just three in a general "serum" category. So tomorrow I am focusing on #Niacinamide, Vitamin C, & retinol and I am breaking up today's posts into #hydratingserums & #correctingserums
.
🥇 @defenageskincare 8-in-1 #BioSerum. $165 for 1 oz. This gel-serum uses age-repairing peptides and a host of other ingredients to repair & strengthens the skin. It's key ingredients activate existing stem cells in the hair follicle to produce new skin cells which lead to brighter, tighter, firmer skin. (Full review on blog). I use this at night after applying retinol. 1st place bc I think it's pretty unique, innovative & works (Especially on mature skin like my mom's)
.
🥈 @you.skincare Glow serum - $60 for 1 oz. I feel like this just made my skin more healthy overall. It has ingredients to gently exfoliate, nourish, and improve the skin's clarity. This is so hydrating but it also feels like vitamins for the skin in that breakouts heals quicker when I use this & inflammation and skin reactivity is reduced. It's a beautiful serum by an amazing small woman-owned (and local to MN!) business
.
🥉 @skinceuticals blemish + age defense $91 for 1 oz - This products helps to prevent & correct imperfections & signs of aging. In a nutshell, it exfoliates skin, decongests pores & refines the skin’s surface. Where I have seen the biggest improvement is in texture on my skin & the regulation of sebum. (Full review on Blog). 3rd place bc I have to cut out other acids while using this, & that is hard. .
🏅Honorable mention: @SkinBetter Alto Defense Serum $145 for 1 oz - This has the most impressive INCI with 19 antioxidant ingredients to help protect my skin from  oxidative stress
.
🏅 @biopelle_inc #TensageSerum $125 for 1 oz - it has growth factors, antioxidants, moisturizers & brightening ingredients. it layers beautifully & made my skin feel nourished & bouncy.
.

How many pumps does it take to get to the bottom of a B-Hydra? 🦉🍭
.
1 line = 2 pumps (which was how much I used to cover my face)
.
I got 34 uses out of this, so 68 pumps! 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
.
These minis really hold more than I had anticipated!
.
This is a nice hydrating product but I think my skin prefers a liquid texture, something like @jordansamuelskin Hydrate serum or @tula aqua infusion power liquid. I found that those two gave my skin a bit more oomph. But I still really enjoyed using this!
.

#drunkelephant #drunkelephantskincare #bhydra #intensivehydrationserum #skincarecommunity #skincarejunkie #skincareblogger #beauty #mnblogger #sephoravibsale

Today for #skinemmies2018 it is supposed to be favorite exfoliator. BUT I am testing a couple new products that are really promising so I want to wait a bit more to post those picks😬🤷‍♀️
.
So instead, I decided to pH test some AHA products that are new to me and overhaul my old acid exfoliation spreadsheet that I haven't updated since 2017. Now it shows new products, Includes various breakout tables on separate tabs in addition to the main table with 105 products to help people sort through everything and find something with an AHA blend, concentration and cost that works for them.
.
I also link to two of my infographics on the topic. 👍🏻
.
NOTE: this is just designed to be a starting point in your search. In terms of the ingredients, this ONLY focuses on the type and percent of the featured AHA/BHA. It is important to also look at the complete ingredient list as some products might include other ingredients that could help reduce irritation, increase irritation, or provide additional benefits other than exfoliation.

#skinemmies2018 Day 5 #AMMoisturizer
.
My main rule is to not spend a lot of money on moisturizers (I save the $$ for serums & treatments) UNLESS they function as a serum in that they have active ingredients that really deliver on their claims. .
🥇 @belifusa True Cream *Moisturizing* Bomb- $38 for 1.68 oz ($22.82/oz) I have used this for awhile & I love the way it makes my skin feel protected and soft. Since it is a little richer, I often use this at night, but in the winter I reach for this in the AM as well. A little goes a long way (I like to apply while my face is damp from other serums or from a mist). The Aqua Bomb is what is recommended for my oily/combo skin, but I don't like that one. I am Team #MoisturizingBomb .
🥈 @januarylabs Labs Moisture Balancing Lotion*(gifted by @cultbeauty)- $28 for 2 oz ($14/oz). The first 3 ingredients in this moisturizer are Squalane, Aloe Vera, Avocado Oil..and it just gets better from there. It is a lightweight moisturizer that reminds me of the texture of the #TatchaWaterCream (except the #tatcha one feels a tiny bit thicker). It has peptides, hydrating ingredients to help plump fine lines and calming and soothing ingredients.
.
🥉 @defenageskincare Barrier Balance Cream - $95 for 1.5 oz ($63/oz). If you have mature or damaged skin & you want a moisturizer that can also fight signs of aging & help repair your skin, this is a great one. This is a lightweight moisturizer that contains ingredients to stimulate new skin cell growth and strengthen and balance the skin’s barrier as well as Niacinamide & some powerful aox for protection & defense. .
🏅Honorable Mention: @argentumapothecary $180 for 2.4 oz ($75/oz). I truly love this product but the price gives me pause. This leaves a satin finish & makes my skin so soft. It has silver hydrosol which has anti-bacterial properties (& I can attest to it helping my skin look & feel less Inflamed when I have a breakout). But given the price I need more time to figure out if it delivers its long-term claims about reducing fine lines.
.
Others that I have used & loved:
@tatcha the water cream $68, 1.7 oz
@stratiaskin Liquid Gold $24, 2 oz
@cerave PM moisturizer $16, 3 oz
