Had some delicious adult slushies today, and I just watched #gameofthrones, so I'd say it's been a pretty good Sunday 🙃. Here's my PM routine.
.
🌝CLEANSE (not pictured): #clinique #takethedayoff this stuff really does take everything off so easily!
.
🌝PEPTIDES: #skinbiology Super GHK-Copper Intensive serum* - I was sad to be without this for a week. I've noticed this has helped with healing my skin after too much sun or a blemish. I am curious if after long term use it also helps with skin tightening/firming.
.
I waited 30 min before proceeding because Copper tripeptides have a higher ideal pH than AHA/BHAs (which are in the next product)
.
🌝TREAT: #skinceuticals #blemishplusagedefense* I ADORE this stuff. It has really helped with skin texture and I've noticed that my pores are less noticeable. I'm half way through this bottle & I'll definitely buy a replacement it when it's gone.❤️
.
🌝EYE CREAM (not pictured): #chanel #lelift eye cream. Such a fabulous eye cream. It has helped keep the skin under my eyes moisturized, the fine lines plumped & with continued use it helped to slightly tighten the skin on my eyelids 🙌🏻
.
🌝CREAM & SERUM: #defenage 24/7 Barrier Balance Cream followed 30 sec later by the 8-in-1 BioSerum* see previous posts for info about these.
.
🌝FACE OIL: #laurelwholeplantorganics anti-inflammatory #facialserum* - I have been testing this to see if it could help with redness, and I'm happy to report that it has! Given its stellar ingredient list I'm not surprised. I have a spreadsheet of facial oils that help target redness and products that have those ingredients & I hope to post that next week! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
.
I hope everyone had a great weekend! (And I wish it wasn't over 😭)

This was my morning & night (➕ SPF) routine for the past 7 days. Because I was working on my condo about 14 hours every day, I actually enjoyed the super simple routine. On the 1st day & 4th day I used the Renewal Mask. Then every AM & PM I did two pumps of the cream after cleansing & then immediately applied 2 pumps of the serum. .
Here are my thoughts after week 1:
💭It did not break me out (yay!)
💭It smells sort of like Jergens daily self tanner. I am not a fan of the smell. But it's bearable
💭My skin never felt dehydrated or dry & it felt smooth & some fine lines were plumped.
💭I enjoyed the Renewal Mask. It's part physical exfoliator (with little sugar crystals) & then you let it sit for 2 min & wet your fingers & massage it in & the crystals dissolve & it turns into a gentle warming creamy texture.
.
Let's turn to the claims made by the company.... now keep in mind, the company found these effects using participants that did not already have a skincare routine. So they were skincare virgins, & I am far from that 😉. (see previous post for more info about study design, product info and product claims).
.
📍Skin should feel more hydrated, smoother & less sensitive within 4 days. ➖Because I already used some great products, my skin didn't feel any more hydrated but these two products were able to keep my skin as hydrated/smooth as a much larger arsenal of products.
.
📍Noticeable brightening effect on the skin, including age spots, within 1st week of use. ➖ In the 4th pic you can see that these products quickly lightened two red spots. My usual products would have taken about 2 to 3 weeks to get them that faded. So these did that much quicker! But it didn't fade the hyperpigmentation around my upper lip (but I would be shocked if anything could do that in 1 week).
.
NEXT STEPS: I plan to keep using these 2x a day for 5 more weeks (but I will not be using them exclusively). After 6 weeks I will see if it lives up to its other claims of wrinkle reduction & reduced visability of pores.📝🔍
.
*This is not a sponsored post but the products were gifted by the company. All opinions are my own

I flew to Atlanta for a conference presentation at 8am this morning & I was supposed to fly back to MN (for one more day of work on the condo before heading back to D.C.) at 10:20pm & my flight is delayed until midnight (gets in at 2am!). Kill me now. 😫😴BUT it gives me time to post a review I've been meaning to write!
.
I just finished my 2nd bottle of #paulaschoice Resist C16 Super Booster #VitaminCSerum. After I finished the first bottle I cleaned it out and bought a 2nd bottle and I put half in the original bottle and gave that to my mom. We have both been using this since April & I have kept mine in the fridge & I've been very careful to use it & quickly put the cap back on. My mom has kept hers out on a counter.
For my first bottle, it was hard to use it up before the 4 month mark which is about the time it started to oxidize. So splitting it was perfect-- and interestingly, my bottle didn't oxidize as much as my mom's (in fact it's almost the same color as when I bought it)! So I will keep the next bottle in the fridge as well 👍🏻
.
🔻How I use it 🔻
I use this almost every morning after cleansing (or after a pH-adjusting toner). Because it is so watery, putting it in my hand didn't work for me. Without touching the dropper to my face, I put 1 drop on each cheek & forehead.
.
🔻Key ingredients🔻
15% L-Ascorbic Acid / #VitaminE / #FerulicAcid
👆🏻
I like my vitamin c serum to have ferulic acid because the combo of LAA + ferulic acid has been found to be particularly effective.
.
🔻Why I use it🔻
This has helped brighten my complexion & reduce the appearance of some pigmentation (it also reduces my freckles, which makes me slightly sad, but it doesn't actually eliminate them completely). This also helps to protect my skin against free radical damage (helping to offset the effects of pollution)
.
🔻Will I repurchase?🔻
Definitely. But first I want to try a Vitamin C derivative in a #BeautyRx Vitamin C serum that I have on hand because I am curious if that also works for my skin

Day 9 of the #cultbeautyskincarechallenge is Ingredient. I thought I would talk about an ingredient that I've been looking into recently.
.
➖What are Defensins?➖
💥Defensins are antimicrobial peptides that we already have in our skin which mobilize and amplify adaptive immune host defences (Oppenheim et al, 2003)
.
💥When you get a cut or wound, the body’s immune system comes to form cells called neutrophils that release defensins to turn on the stem cell locus of LGR6+ (Lough et al, 2013). Activated LGR6+ stem cells create new basal stem cells & the newly-created basal stem cells produce fresh keratinocytes which form the skin’s barrier (by comparison, retinol stimulates preexisting basal stem cells to make keratinocytes).
.
💥There is a new product by #defenage that contains a synthetic copy of those defensins. Synthetically produced defensins are thought to turn on the “sleeping” LGT6+ stem cells (that are usually only activated when we cut/scrape our skin) to produce new (and younger appearing) skin. One study showed that defensins also thicken the skin; thickening the skin helps make the skin look less transparent, which gives it a brighter reflection and it is also going to retain more water.
.
💥The efficacy of this ingredient for a skincare product is currently being investigated in a randomized, placebo/vehicle-controlled, double-blinded study; where half of the participants are given the products with the Alpha & Beta Defensins versus the same products without the active ingredient. (It's a well designed study). There have been some promising results in terms of reduction of wrinkles & brown spots, & an improvement in tone/ texture, but it is still ongoing.
.
Here are some claims:
📍Skin should feel more hydrated, more comfortable, smoother & less sensitive within 4 days.
📍Noticeable brightening effect on the skin, including age spots, within the first week of use
📍Reduction of superficial and deep wrinkles in 6 weeks
📍Reduction of visible pores in 6 weeks
.
Those are some big claims! I'm skeptical but also intrigued. So I have decided to test the Defenage regimen* & to enlist the help of my mom to also test their efficacy (cont.🔻)

😍🤢What are your 3 best & worst smelling products?😍🤢
.
I started thinking about this after my husband described #SundayRiley #GoodGenes as "💩 that has been sitting in a 🚽 with cheap lemon air fresheners" (he has a real way with words🙄🤦🏼‍♀️). I personally think it smells like lemon cleaning products, & I don't mind it! Just goes to show you that smells are so subjective! 😆🤷🏼‍♀️
.
I thought it would be fun to create the hashtag #Manysmellsofskincare so that we can see the top 3 best & worst/weirdest smelling products you use. I've started with my own & I hope you all will join me in posting your top 3 of each!😀
.
Disclaimer: Just because something smells good doesn't mean it's effective (#captainobvious but I felt like I should be sure to say that!😉). However, if I can find a product that is effective AND smells good, I feel like I've hit the skincare jackpot 🏆. There have been a few times where a product was effective but I had to stop using it bc of an awful smell. I'm ok with most smells, but I can't deal with smells like mildew or rotting fish. I have had to give away a few products bc the smell was too awful for my husband to even be in the same room as me (I've learned he HATES the smell of blue tansy, cumin, & of course, Good Genes... 😔🙄...).
.
➖Top 3 BEST Smelling Products➖
If you are curious about what they actually do for my skin, just ask in comments!
.
🥇#Osmosis #RepairHealingMask - 👃🏻fudge brownie mix with cinnamon on top
.
🥈#Maylindstromskin #thehoneymud - 👃🏻cocoa, orange, honey, vanilla
.
🥉ML #BlueCocoon 👃🏻tootsie rolls (annoyingly, this is one of the products my husband hates the smell of it but I refuse to give it up because breathing it in truly calms my nerves)
.
. ➖ Top 3 Worst/Weirdest Smelling Products➖
.
🥇#AlliesofSkin #MolecularSaviorMist - 👃🏻Dill. I am getting close to the point of not being able to use this bc it makes me feel nauseous. It smells strongly of dill & the smell lingers for hours.😬
.
🥈#BiologiqueRecherche #LotionP50 - 👃🏻Chloraseptic throat spray. I actually don't mind the smell but it is weird & strong.
.
🥉#sarahchapman #skinesis #liquidfacialresurfacer 👃🏻sour vinegar (cont. below👇🏻)

🏆#JULYFAVORITES🏆
Hands down my favorite product for the past two to three months has been the @skinceuticals Blemish + Age Defense*. This has helped the most with the small texture that I get on my forehead. I use this all over to help with skin resurfacing, healing post-acne spots, & minimizing appearance of pores (I use #peterthomasroth #acneclearinggel specifically as a #spottreatment). When I got my eyebrow microblading touched up 2 weeks ago I had to not use any acid exfoliant on my forehead for 10 days. Sure enough new texture emerged on my forehead (the kind that you really only notice in photos but it's still obnoxious!!).
.
#stratia Liquid Gold Moisturizer-- I use this almost every day and nearly every night. The reason is because it helps with redness (#Niacinamide), helps with scars (sea buckthorn 👈🏻one of my fav oils!) and it helps to keep my skin's acid mantle in tip top shape 💁🏼This also layers and mixes well which makes my #skincareroutine easy and efficient.
.
@odacite Aloe + #immortelle Hydra #treatmentmist* -- did a blog post on this beauty that's on IG & up on the blog. I ❤️It!
.
@beautyrxskincare #solardefense* #broadspectrum #spf50 - this never makes me greasy & love the combo of physical & chemical protection. (I also posted a longer review of this)
.
👋🏻#JULYEMPTIES👋🏻
WNP= Would not purchase 👎🏻
RP=Already re-purchased👍🏻
WP= I will purchase once I am off my damn No Buy 😒🤞🏻
.
#glamglow #supermud - 👎🏻This was too drying for me & it was clumpy. There are other #Mudmasks I like a lot more. Also I found a little twig/branch in this. Is that normal? Kind of weird.🤷🏼‍♀️
.
#soldejaneiro #brazilianbumbumcream - 👍🏻 I can't help it, I love this. this leaves my skin so soft with a very subtle shimmer, it's easy to spread, & this cream smells so good😍
.
#tatcha #dewyskin #facialmist - 👍🏻since I am oily/combo I have to use this sparingly, I spray just on cheekbones .
#jordansamuel #hydrateserum 🤞🏻(this will be my 3rd bottle 😍) .
#maylindstromskin #thegoodstuff 🤞🏻@lathertolashes sent me this sample size after I ran out of mine😘but I quickly used that up. 😐The obsession is real.

〰PRIVATE LABELING OF SKINCARE PRODUCTS〰
.
About a month or so ago I was googling an ingredient list for a product and I came across FIVE other products with the exact same ingredient list but different branding. (And the product I was initially looking into was the most expensive of the products by about $50!). I was shocked because the product in question was sold by a small brand owner that made it seem like they had used their years of training and experience as an esthetician to specifically develop each of their products.
.
🤔So this got me thinking about private labeling. Is it a bad thing? A good thing? I actually think it's not that cut and dry (at least for me)
.
For example, you won't find me complaining when Costco sells another companies vodka or gin for a much better price 😬🤷🏼‍♀️. But I'm not sure how I feel about it when it comes to skincare. Again, on one hand it can be a good thing because you can potentially find a product for less.
.
But I have found that with all the brands out there, I really love supporting small businesses and indie brands with an owner that has a compelling background/training/skincare philosophy. But I don't necessarily want to use products that are just rebranded formulations. Does that mean that I think that private labels product "bad" or low quality products? No. Not necessarily.
.
A couple weeks ago @antiagingamber and I were discussing this issue & she did some investigative work & found that Osmosis offers the opportunity to private label their products. But in that instance, the company that was selling Osmosis products under their branding was selling it for MORE money. .
Recently I've started to google the complete ingredient list (not one ingredient at a time) for any new product. Two companies that recently reached out to me were selling private label products so I thought since I was oblivious to this practice a couple months ago it might be useful to share what I've learned in case you all find it helpful.
.
So what do you all think? Would you be ok with a brand that uses private labeling?

🍉Watermelon Seed Oil /
Kalahari Melon Seed Oil /
Citrullus lanatus 🍉
.
Watermelon is my absolute favorite fruit & it turns out it's seeds are also great for your skin!
.
〰FATTY ACID PROFILE〰(see 2nd pic; Parker, 2015)
.
〰BENEFITS〰
🍉GREAT for oily skin due to high Linoleic acid content. It reduces sebum on the skin by dissolving it away. 🍉Anti-Inflammatory and can help relieve pain associated with breakouts
🍉GREAT for acne-prone skin because it nourishes & repairs without clogging pores
🍉It is gentle; those with dry, irritated skin conditions like eczema & psoriasis may really like this
🍉Extremely light oil; quickly absorbed
🍉High in anti-oxidants to protect cells from free radicals
🍉It's highly stable, has a long shelf life & works great as a carrier oil.
.
〰Below are some products that have #watermelonseedoil (I note how high up in ingredient list it is & whether it is cold-pressed or wild harvested)〰
.
🍉Kalahari Melon Seed oil from @thealluringalchemist (1st AND ONLY ingredient!! / wild harvested, cold pressed & it comes from a women's co-op #girlpower & is fairly traded 🏆👏🏻). $10 for 15 mL (This is such a great value!)
I was chatting with Liz from @thegranolagoat & also @thealluringalchemist about watermelon seed oil & she told me their first subscription box would have watermelon seed oil included! 😱❤️ She sent me just the oil from their first box (launching in Sept) & I am SO impressed with it! It's incredibly light & leaves my skin moisturized & glowing. I have been using it as a cleanser, as a moisturizer, mixed with my moisturizer in the morning, in my hair, & mixed with other oils. (Because this is so light it works well when you combine it with other face oils that don't have this amazing ingredients). Bottom line, It's AMAZING. I can't wait to see the entire Jupiter Box!
.
🍉#Alkimi @roadtoglow has created her own custom blend (Coming soon!) that I couldn't be more excited about! (3rd ingredient / cold pressed) - £35 for 20 mL
.
🍉#AfricanBotanics Fleurs D'Afrique (1st ingredient / wild harvested-$250 for 30 mL
.
🍉#deMamiel Salvation Body oil (5th ingredient) $119 for 200mL
.
🍉#AsterandBay Purify Facial Serum (2nd ingredient) -$55 for 30mL

New #Gtggphtest Time of the #Sephoracollection Cleansers that are on sale for $4
.
Bottom line for me: I didn't care for them. 🤷🏼‍♀️😬
.
The Pomegranate and Yuzu both turn into a Milky consistency (see video of Pomegranate) when you wet them (which I liked) but my skin just didn't get fully cleaned after & it felt a bit dry. The Green Tea cleanser is unique from the other two in that it had little "micro-pearls" to provide some mild exfoliation. They all contain fragrance & dye. (See ingredients in photos)
.
💰 $4.00 for 1.69 oz
.
📍#Yuzu #cleansingcream: pH=5.8
.
📍#Pomegranatecleanser: pH= 6.2
.
📍#Greentea #exfoliatingcream: pH = 5.8 .
.
🔆Very Important: The pH of a product only indicates whether it is acidic or basic. It can’t predict how your skin will respond to it. Other factors (like the overall formula) still need to be taken into consideration.
.
🔆Cleansers with a slightly acidic pH of 4.5-5.5 are particularly ecommended for people with #acne, #rosacea, eczema, or dry skin, but everyone can benefit from a cleanser with a pH in that range (or at least no higher than 6.5--I wouldn't personally go that high since I am acne-prone...see why below👇
.
🔆The acid mantle of our skin is slightly acidic, with an average pH of 4.7 (Lambers, et al., 2006). Cleansers with a slightly acidic pH help to maintain the skin’s natural environment & protect the acid mantle. Disrupting the acid mantle can lead to acne, inflammation, atopic dermatitis, dehydrated or dry skin, skin sensitivity, & even fine lines.
.
🔆Acne grows well at pH values between 6 and 6.5 & when pH drops to 5.5, its growth noticeably decreases (Korting & Braun-Falco, 1996). Skin at 5.5 pH is better at preventing the growth of bacteria than skin at 6.5 pH (90% of bacteria prevented vs 60%, Schittek et al 2001).
.
🔆Raising your skin’s pH to a 6.0 or higher, leaves the skin open to dryness, infection, & damage on a perpetual basis. Long-term use of cleansers with a high pH can result in irritation that is great enough to cause hyperpigmentation (Baranda et al., 2002)
.
👩🏼‍🔬Fun fact 👨‍💻
The pH level scale is logarithmic – meaning each 1-unit increase represents a ten-fold increase.

🌞REVIEW of @katesomervilleskincare #UncomplikatedSPF #SPF50
.
🌞This is described as a soft focus #makeupsettingspray with broad spectrum SPF 50 #sunscreen [ingredients in comments]
.
🌞Cost: $38 for 3.4 oz ($11.18 / oz)
.
🌞How long did it last? ~ 3 months.
.
🌞Will I repurchase? I already did ☺️
.
🌞How do I use it? I usually don't use this to set my makeup, although you certainly could do that because it works great over makeup. Instead, I use this to touch up my sunscreen throughout the day and I primarily use it to apply sunscreen before my walk home from work. I workout at the gym at my work & I have a 18 min walk home. I really hate putting on a cream sunscreen when my face is hot & sweaty, so this mist is PERFECT for post workout sun protection.
.
🌞How does it feel on the skin?
I am pretty heavy handed when I apply this. I do 4 short vertical bursts down my face & then about 5 zig zags horizontally. Because I spray a lot, it does feel a bit heavy on my face. However, when I have done a quick touch up mid-day & sprayed less, i couldn't feel it on my skin & it gives a soft finish to skin.
.
🌞What I didn't like about it:
It is loud. When I shake this in my office or in the restroom, I am pretty sure my coworkers think I am about to tag some graffiti on the wall. 😬Not a big deal, just keep in mind that you can't inconspicuously apply this. Also, if you spray this in an enclosed space (like a public restroom) you will fill the air with the scent of lavender and a fog of sunscreen (is it more noticeable and thicker than a hairspray would be).
.
🌞Bottom Line: I ❤️ that this makes it easy for me to reapply sunscreen for my walk home. The scent is nice (those sensitive to Lavender should avoid it) & I like that it doesn't make my greasy (in the video I had just worked out, hence the shine. 😓Otherwise it does help control shine). And I like it has a high SPF.
.
🌞What are your favorite ways to touch up SPF throughout the day?!

🌶 This @bottegaorganica body contour oil has blown me away .... and that is saying something because the sample I bought from Detox Market spilled so I only had enough oil to cover one thigh 😒😑#thickthighssavelives .
🌶ANYWAYS... so it's this gorgeous blood orange color that spreads in nicely and sinks in pretty quickly. It smells like peppermint and after a couple minutes you start to feel a tingly, cooling feeling.
.
🌶This is designed for #cellulite -prone areas and organic chili peppers that are packed with capsaicin molecules, which increases the blood flow and absorption of the other beneficial ingredients into your skin.
.
🌶What TRULY blew me away was that when I got home from work and changed out of my work clothes I noticed that my left thigh was INCREDIBLY soft with no film or greasiness. None of my body lotions or body oils that I have tried that left me with skin that soft after one use.
.
🌶So if that is all this body oil can do--I would be beyond happy with it. But if it can also help to stimulate and increase circulation that would also be great!
.
🌶Just to be clear, I don't think that any oil or cream can get rid of cellulite (but lord knows I would love to be proven wrong!!). But I have found that soft and supple skin that has good circulation can provide short term fixes and help reduce the appearance. (In my experience only weight lifting has made a huge difference.) I also believe it's a good thing to increase circulation in your legs (be that through cupping massage, dry brushing, and foam rolling).
.
🌶I had never heard of this brand before I found it on Detox Market but now I am SUPER interested in finding out more.
.
🌶Are any of you familiar with this brand or product?? Or are you familiar with other body oils with circulation stimulating ingredients?
.

I was actually looking forward to this routine tonight because of the #biologiquerecherche P50 (which I won in a giveaway from @lua.loves 😘). It did not disappoint!
.
#oilcleanser: #thegranolagoat #preparefortakeoff - fabulous oil cleanser. @thegranolagoat will be launching a new skincare subscription service soon (@thealluringalchemist) and I'm very excited for it! She is a great example of a fabulous #smallbusinessowner that cares about making great products & has great customer service.
.
#lowphcleanser - #isclinical Cleansing complex 👍🏻🙌🏻
.
#acidtoner - BR p50 1970 🕺🏻version. I definitely had some 🍅 face but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be & it didn't last long. The smell just reminds me of being sick & spraying Chloraseptic in my throat. I LOVE that it has sulfur (which my skin & any breakouts respond really well to) as well as Niacinamide in addition to AHA & BHA.
.
#toner - #wellwithinbeauty #toninglotion* (this is becoming a favorite bc it is calming and it keep skins damp for the next step in routine)
.
#facemist - #alliesofskin #molecularsaviour toning mist. Out of all the ingredient lists that I entered for the mist spreadsheet on my blog, this one *really* stood out! So healing and very unique! So I'm excited to keep using it but goodness the smell of dill is more potent than I had anticipated. 😆
.
[While face is still wet from mist, move on to next step]
.
#moisturizer - #stratia #liquidgold This is the perfect moisturizer for when I use acids bc I find it SO healing. But I find myself always wanting to use this moisturizer with or without an acid in the routine. It's so good.
.
#faceoil - #laurelskin #antiinflammatory #facialsserum - y'all this oil is no joke. I've been using it nightly since I got it, and I already feel like my skin is less red every morning (particularly around nose). The testing continues!! (But take a gander at that ingredient list! It's one amazing ingredient after another😍)
