Sometimes other people can express what you want to say even better than you can. This is one of those times. 👏🏻 @chr1styharrison and @beauty_redefined are nailing it 👏🏻 God sent me the Food Psych Podcast in His perfect timing and it's opened up so much for me in this body-image-battle-with-insecurity-turned-spiritual-awakening that has rocked my world in the last year. If you want to get a crash course in a totally new way to think about your relationship to food and your body (and hear the expert explain better than I ever could why Diet Culture is #thelifethief) check out Food Psych. It is such a blessing to me!

❤️🙏🏻 My prayer this First Sunday of Lent ❤️🙏🏻 Dear Lord, during this sacred season of Lent, draw me nearer to You. Quiet my mind and open my heart to make a bigger place for You. Help me to fast from those things that threaten the well-being of my body and soul. Soften my heart so that I may give willingly and show Your love to others and, in so doing, read discover the grace of gratitude and generosity. Thank You for all the blessings and beauty in my life, I give You the glory for it. Thank You especially for opportunity to slow down, spend time in nature, spend time in worship and spend time with the wonderful husband You have blessed me with. Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

Fasting is a loaded word in diet culture. Fasting for Lent has a totally different meaning.

On Fridays we #fast during Lent. No meat. Minimal, simple meals. Take today's lunch for example: carrot ginger soup with some thai basil leaves from my garden.

I must admit, I was a little worried when I learned of the #fasting aspect of #Lent and its importance. 35 years of being conditioned by diet culture has made food restrictions triggering for me. Restrictions translate as control in my mind, until the pendulum swings over to the other side where deprivation explodes into a “screw it” mentality.

Just THINKING of fasting forces me to check myself and be aware. I can simply notice the old patterns burned into my brain from years of dieting. *Oh there they are, yep, they are still in there * I can notice the trap, but not fall into it. #mindfulness
This Lent I will not fall into the trap of labeling foods as “good” or “bad” and the internalizing those judgments. My mind wants to go there but my soul feels differently now. Over the past few months on my walk with God, I’ve been blessed to be able to see things differently.

Fasting isn’t about control, being “good” or trying to be perfect. That’s what I made it about, but that’s not what God made it about. I made it about me, but God made it about Him.

As beautifully stated in “Lent the promise of prayer, fasting and almsgiving” by OurSundayVistitor: “The discipline of fasting helps us recognize our true hunger – for Christ- and seek a closer relationship to him to satisfy that hunger”

Lent Day 2 // I have claimed Psalm 139:14 "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." (NIV) This verse speaks right to my heart and cuts through the lies of diet culture. This verse came to life for me in the @ellieholcomb song "Wonderfully Made." If you have ever believed the lies of diet culture that say you are not enough just as you are, if you have ever doubted your own worth, if you have ever struggled to see your own beauty, you need to hear this song. It's part of my inspiration for giving up diet culture for Lent. See the whole inspiration story and my official anti-diet-culture rant over on the blog. Link in profile. 👆🏻

Today is Ash Wednesday. This marks the beginning of the sacrificial season of Lent, which Pope Francis says is a time of renewal and grace. The ashes are a reminder “For you are dust and to dust you shall return.” ❤️ As one of my favorite authors @lysaterkeurst teaches, God loves the ingredient dust to make things new: the creation of man, the healing of the blind with mud, just dust and saliva. And while dust can remind us that all temporal things are passing, dust does not mean the end. In fact, dust must be present for new to begin ❤️ It reminds me of the lyrics from Beautiful Things, “You make beautiful things, you make beautiful things out of the dust, You make beautiful things, you make beautiful things out of us”, my anthem for this Ash Wednesday. ❤️
I step into this Lenten season with a cross in the center of my forehead and dedicate this time to bringing the cross into the center of my being, with expectant faith for the renewal that will follow. That means removing the old things in my life that separate me from the love of God and focusing on the things that draw me deeper into His love. ❤️ So for Lent I am giving up diet culture and the negativity, judgment and attachment to outcome that flow from it. I plan to share throughout the next 40 days as I reflect on what life is like without the false idol of diet culture and with my eyes, instead, fixed on God.

I was a straight A student for so long. As I let go of my perfectionist tendencies and open myself up to true learning (for its own sake and because I actually enjoy it) Life has given me so many new teachers in books, classes, podcasts, people. I am digging in, journaling and sharing this journey on my blog. 👆🏻 Link in profile 👆🏻The most recent installment is about Gratitude Training.
