How long should a bulking phase be? There is no real set rule but what we can say is that generally, the more advanced you are, the longer your gaining phases should be since building muscle is a very slow process and the longer you've been lifting the less lean tissue you will build on a month to month basis.
So basically, the longer you can bulk while staying within a reasonable bodyfat range, the better.

There is really no magic secret or trick to staying lean in the offseason/bulking phase. It all comes down to calorie control. Raise them in a slow and controlled manerand simply watch how your body reacts. If you start gaining to fast, cut them back a bit, if you aren't gainining at all, raise them again. .
Now sometimes it can be hard to gage your progress because of the fact that you are only making small adjustments. That's why keeping track of certain measurements can be very helpful such as your weight, look in the mirror and your body measurements. .
In addition having someone external have a look on you can go a long way too, especially since you are seeing yourself multiple times a day and so it can be hard to stay objective.
