Rubin´s choice of archetypical scenes as well as the willing to erase every possible reference to a specific environmental context, evoke a memory in the viewer rather than arouse detailed associations. Rubin’s abstraction method follows the Latin etymology of abstrahere, meaning “to separate”: he wants to separate the level of iconography from the historical contingency of the original image to liberate it to different interpretations. Thus this kind of “blankness” that characterizes Rubin’s work, highlights the power of the images to create fantasies and reconstruct memories. Far from being sentimental, Gideon’s Rubin paintings are indeed imbued with a nostalgic feeling.

Pierre Soulages his wife Colette and Karsten Greve enjoying the sun in Sète and talking about the upcoming exhibition @GalerieKarstenGreve in Paris.
.
Pierre Soulages is recognised as one of the major figures of abstract art and the greatest painter of the contemporary French art scene. In 1979, Soulages, who had already been painting for three decades, embarked on a new phase with works he called Outrenoir, based on the light reflected from a surface entirely covered in black. Using only black and working on the relation between black and light, Pierre Soulages constructed a pictorial space that – despite his reliance on one single colour – stands opposed to the monochrome in the development of Modern art. Self-taught and independent of any artistic movement, he explored the painter's means of expression and developed his own non-descriptive and poetic style.

“My work is related to my own processes of coming to terms with understanding our relations with animals and with my own feelings of discomfort at everything in life being impermanent. All of my work eventually leads back to ideas about life, death, and the human condition. We are never really secure in any way, yet we yearn for the security of permanence in our lives.” (Claire Morgan)
.
Join the artist and us today from 6 to 8 p.m. @GalerieKarstenGreve in Cologne for the opening of

Morgan’s highly aesthetic mises-en-scène of imagined encounters between animals and human cultural achievements are enchanting, bizarre and brutal at the same time. Her fragile minimalist installations reflect her profound interest in natural processes and her pronounced environmental awareness. She uses sensitive materials, which she puts together with meticulous attention. Dandelion seeds and thistledown, prepared dead insects, supplemented by pieces of thin polyethylene and cellophane are fixed to transparent nylon threads to create three-dimensional geometric forms, alongside or within which she places prepared animal cadavers. The sculptural installations unfold in the gallery’s empty room, suspended from the ceiling, laid on the floor or displayed in glass cabinets resting on plinths. The equilibrium of the installations changes when the beholder perceives the work with all of its levels of significance from different angles of view.

Today is the opening of “Impressions” the second solo exhibition by Qiu Shihua @GalerieKarstenGreve Paris, from 6 to 8 p.m..
.
Scarcely any trace at all remains of the genesis of the creation on canvas, and the matter itself has a transparent fluid-like quality that allows the canvas to show through and to look almost completely untouched. In this way, Qiu Shihua employs the Taoist concept of "action without action" – allowing the result to occur according to its own path – or rather, vice-versa: no action via action. Through the creative act itself, he obtains a painting that is intriguing to the onlooker due to what does indeed look like its own apparent absence: he has managed to depict emptiness. It is worth pointing out that in Chinese the word for ‘white’ and the word for ‘empty’ (respectively Baise and Kongbai) have the same root (-bai-). The colour white therefore answers to a yearning for emptiness as the ultimate essence of all things.
Qiu Shihua’s paintings therefore require the onlooker to adjust their eyes continuously, thus allowing the painting to reveal itself in time. This exhibition encourages the public to travel into a metaphysical world ruled over by a sense of calm, and wherein the experience of looking becomes one of self-awareness and of ultimate realities.

With painting as its point of departure, Manish Nai, born 1980 in Gujarat, India, developed his practice into a unique form in which he pasted gunny cloth onto canvas and created increasingly complex patterns in the fabric by cutting out bits of the warp. These early experiments revitalized the field of abstraction in an era when the figure dominated Indian art. After nearly a decade spent refining his work in jute and canvas, Manish began experimenting with illusionistic murals, photography, and sculpture.
Though Manish Nai lives within and takes inspiration from the bustle and noise of contemporary urban India, he connects through his paintings and sculptures with the natural world, and with stretches of time at the boundaries of human imagination. He draws on humble objects and mediums to create works that are expressive and accessible, but at the same time precise and conceptually rigorous.

In his landscapes, white is master. Everything hinges on subtle variations. The image itself, hidden amongst nuances and transparencies, is brought forth as the onlooker gazes at the painting. Qiu Shihua takes western-style oil paint and makes it work within what is a very Asian technique based primarily on diluting the amount of material absorbed by the untreated canvas – similar to the way ink on paper is used in traditional Chinese landscapes. Qiu Shihua twins white with light itself, and conceives of the pictorial creation as a transition from the realm of shadows into the clear perception of the pattern or image: as would an impressionist who makes light the focal point of the piece. Layer by layer, he subtly reveals a landscape comprised of nuances and transparencies that do not provide an immediate visual epiphany for the spectator. An ideal incarnation of Taoist ideology – a religion to which the artist has adhered to for over twenty years – these paintings invite the onlooker on a journey for the eye and the mind, one in which attaining the final destination is less important than following along the necessary path.

Claire Morgan’s works on paper show executed stand-alone compositional drafts in lead, watercolour and Indian ink. The paper may have served as the work surface for preparing the animal corpses, with the result that traces of blood or other remains of the dead creature are visible.
.
In ever new variations, Morgan reveals the contrasts of life and death, beauty and cadaver. The dynamics of becoming and decay, of movement and stasis, are clearly present in her works. In Human Nature Moon, where a jackdaw with wings spread is enclosed in a translucent cube made of small pieces of plastic foil, the bird is transferred to a perilous death zone, the plastic fragments symbolizing the thoughtless way humankind deals with the earth’s resources. The title of the work seems to have been chosen with conscious irony.

Nature has always been the source of Qiu Shihua's art. The artist often refers to his journey across the Gobi desert – its immensity and its dryness – as being a founding experience for his artistic process. While he did indeed begin his career painting outdoors, he would soon discover a preference for working in his studio where he would translate the feelings that nature inspires into paintings. His works are therefore "Natural atmospheres" more so than representations of a physical reality.

We are happy to announce that the Show „Last Folio“ by Yuri Dojc is extending until august 25th at Galerie Karsten Greve in Cologne.
.
Photographer, artist and witness, Yuri Dojc’s expansive practice encompasses many kinds of looking. His multi-lens trajectory has pivoted from an established commercial photography practice to his current gaze as an artful observer of the vestiges of history’s most vulnerable. In 1968, as Russian tanks were rolling into his native Czechoslovakia, the young student summering in London became, abruptly, “refugee.” And soon, that status shifted again, to immigrant, as Dojc made his way to Canada. In the decades since, the photographer has made Toronto his home, and the world both his subject and his host.
